Beijing start-up makes nanostructures that could result In cheaper electric car batteries
A Beijing startup called Wuhe is making electrode materials and batteries that could lower the cost of electric vehicles. The company uses nanostructures for battery materials that, like other recent nanostructures, let the materials deliver the large bursts of power needed for acceleration while maintaining energy storage capacity. But the Wuhe advance also makes the materials easier to work with than similar electrode materials, and as a result, it could cut battery-cell manufacturing costs by 10 percent.

Ford Motor Co.'s New Ad Strategy: Is It Driven by Solar Energy?
As political scandals go, the Solyndra flap, in and of itself, may not have real legs. True, information is leaking, hearings are being held, and there is moderately protracted media interest in the now-bankrupt solar energy company that received $535 million in federal loan guarantees. Yet the scandal has not deflected the Obama Administration's commitment to distribute $9.2 billion to renewable energy companies before a September 30 deadline. Nor is it a strictly partisan scandal in any event as the loan program dates back to the Bush Administration, which first found "merit" in the Solyndra application.

GM sells just 281 Chevy Volts in February, Nissan only moves 67 Leafs
Peruse Chevrolet's February sales release, and you'll notice one number that's blatantly missing: the number of Chevy Volts sold. The number — a very modest 281 — is available in the company's detailed data (PDF), but it certainly isn't something that GM wants to highlight, apparently. Keeping the number quiet is a bit understandable, since it's lower than the 321 that Chevy sold in January.

New Cars 2012
It's a challenge for anyone to keep up with the constantly changing roster of cars on dealership lots. For car lovers it's an even tougher task, because beyond knowing that a certain model exists, you need to know where it fits in the automotive firmament. That's why we've gathered every new model due by the first half of 2012 and categorized them, not alphabetically or by some government-defined size class, but by their relevance to buyers, enthusiasts, and the companies that build them. Some cars thrust automakers into new segments, while others drive just like last year's model. Some cars protect the sanctity of the manual transmission, while others advance performance with the latest technology. Some cars address rising fuel-economy standards, while others disguise obscene speed in stealthy sheetmetal. Here are the 85 new arrivals shaping the automotive world for 2012.

New uses for exhausted electric vehicle batteries proposed
In a move with far and wide consequences for the automobile industry, many groups are banding together to study the two-pronged problem of high initial costs for lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries for electric vehicles, and then what to do with those batteries once they lose their ability to hold a strong enough charge to keep motorists moving. Most proposed solutions center around reusing the batteries in applications that don't require a battery to be fully chargeable, such as battery backups for an electrical grid; thus allowing the initial cost of the batteries to be spread out over a much longer lifespan.

Noise, Vibration & Harshness: It Ain't Broken, It's Fixed
It's exhausting to hear the chattering classes blame our lack of a coherent and forward-thinking energy policy (or just about any other policy) on a broad systemic dysfunction. "The system is not working!" they whimper, shaking their heads in disbelief, saying it's another example of the decline of sense and civility in our public discourse. Critics rail against policies brazenly favoring the oil industry -- tax breaks, subsidies, and a regulatory climate just this side of whoopee -- making it sound like environmental degradation was part of the founders' original intent. This makes the critics one part sad, one part angry, and three parts ripped off, not unlike the way my son Milo behaves when a battery-powered toy craps out at an inopportune moment.

Research Into Batteries Will Give Electric Cars the Same Range as Gas Cars, Experts Say
Li-air batteries are a promising opportunity for electric cars. "If we succeed in developing this technology, we are facing the ultimate break-through for electric cars, because in practice, the energy density of Li-air batteries will be comparable to that of petrol and diesel, if you take into account that a combustion engine only has an efficiency of around 30 per cent," says Tejs Vegge, senior scientist in the Materials Research Division at Risø DTU. If batteries with an energy density this great become a reality, one could easily imagine electrically powered trucks.

Rethink nanotechnology to convert a car's waste heat into electrical power
No one is happy about rising gas prices, and to make matters worse, up to 60 percent of each $4 gallon is wasted, lost as heat that pours out of the exhaust pipe. But what if some of that heat could be collected and converted back into electricity that can recharge the battery that powers the lights, wipers, power steering, or even the electric motor in a hybrid vehicle?

Seven Major Automakers Agree to a Universal Charging System For Electric Cars
A pretty basic fear of the oncoming electric car boom is a concern that charging will be similar to the old cellphone-charger fiasco. Will the owner of a 2017 Mazda Thundersnake have to find particular Mazda charging stations, or will they be able to pull up behind a Chrysler EnFuego? Those fears can be allayed, mostly: seven major automakers have all agreed to adopt a single, universal charging system.

Sneak Preview: Audi A8 Hybrid
While some top-shelf luxury hybrid cars are sold mainly for the sake of their "green" street — er, country club — cred, a new entry may actually deliver the goods as a bona fide high-mileage model. Coming in 2012, a hybrid version of the flagship Audi A8 sedan will team a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor generator and self-charging 1.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack to realize an impressive 37 mpg. That would come to at least a 10 mpg improvement over the standard 2012 Audi A8.

Temperature differences give rise to electricity
More than half of today's energy consumption is squandered in useless waste heat, such as the heat from refrigerators and all sorts of gadgets and the heat from factories and power plants. The energy losses are even greater in cars. Automobile motors only manage to utilise 30 per cent of the energy they generate. The rest of it is lost. Part of the heat loss ends up as warm brakes and a hot exhaust pipe.

A contemporary Lotus will never win a comparison test that values practicality. The sills are too wide, the pedal box is too cramped, and the switch gear is too finicky for daily use. Why Car Rental Companies Can Charge $9 Per Gallon for Gas
$9.29 per gallon is an enormous amount of money to pay for gas—that's well over twice the national average of $3.71 per gallon, but it's what I'll pay Hertz if I forget to fill up my rental car when I return it to Las Vegas's airport at the end of the week. I've often been struck by these prices when I've seen them posted (and once ended up paying them)—how can the market tolerate prices like those? Here's the economics behind outrageously expensive rental car gas:
