Avast! Free Antivirus 6.0 delivers robust protection for the right price (Review)
Updates to stand-alone antivirus tools generally aren't anything to get excited about. The interface might have changed color, or maybe relocated a few buttons, and of course you'll get the standard promises about improved accuracy, or better performance, but otherwise it's often business as usual.

How AVG keeps your computer safe
The city of Brno in the Czech Republic is a place people go to learn. Situated some 130 miles southeast of Prague, its 11 universities host approximately 80,000 students, many of whom are computer engineers. So it's no surprise that while AVG's corporate offices are headquartered back in Prague, Brno hosts the lifeblood of the company: the virus lab.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012
In PCMag's tests Kaspersky didn't score well, and one threat nearly defeated it. It has trouble detecting the very newest phishing sites. Yet the independent antivirus labs rank it at or near the top.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2012
The independent labs love Kaspersky's antivirus protection, but it fared poorly in PCMag's hands-on tests. Its firewall is impressive, and the Safe Run sandboxing feature protects the system from questionable files and Web sites, but the antispam and antiphishing features failed to impress. Choose this suite if its strong points align with your needs.

Microsoft Security Essentials bombs on first 2011 AV-Test
Ever since its arrival, I've been happily using Microsoft Security Essentials -- and while one poor showing in a comparative test isn't going to drive me away, I'll admit I'm a little concerned. AV-Test GmbH has posted results from its first quarter 2011 testing of 22 antivirus applications on Windows 7, and MSE barely managed to squeak out a certification-worthy score. AV-Test requires a minimum of 11 points to certify, and MSE posted 11.5.

Microsoft Security Essentials is most used anti-virus
Microsoft Security Essentials was found running on 10.66% of the 43,000 computers that were tested by OPSWAT worldwide. This beats the second place getter by a small margin, which was Avira Antivir Personal with a 10.18% share; AVAST! Free Antivirus came third with 8.66%.

Symantec's Norton updates for 2012 launched today with the expected slate of performance improvements and interesting ancillary features and with a hint of a much stronger connection between the company's desktop and mobile offerings. Tight security, thin premium features define F-Secure 2012
The Finnish security firm F-Secure gains a large percentage of its business from corporate accounts and platform operators, but that doesn't mean that it treats its consumer security suites as a ginger-haired child of indeterminate parentage and poor temperament. The new versions of F-Secure Internet Security 2012 (download) and F-Secure Anti-Virus 2012 (download) focus on keeping its security ahead of the curve, along with some ease-of-use improvements. However, as other suites emphasize their engine improvements along with an ever-expanding feature set, F-Secure remains steadfastly lean.
