EA buys PopCap -- does that mean Activision needs to buy Zynga?
This week, casual game maker PopCap, best known for Plants vs. Zombies and Bejeweled, agreed to be acquired by Electronic Arts in a deal said to be worth around $650 million. The move came as a surprise to many, as PopCap has been making serious moved towards an IPO, and as recently as a few weeks ago, company representatives told me that a public offering was definitely their long-term plan.

Game copy protection rolls further downhill
Remember several weeks ago when I was complaining about the draconian DRM measures utilized on Batman: Arkham City? I’ve come to enjoy that game, but knowing that I’m so limited in the number of installs I get on multiple computers with it has tampered my enthusiasm more than a little. Still, I’m kicking myself at the moment for not saving up some of my vitriol for use on a newly revealed DRM scheme on another game that is, if you can believe it, even more abominable.

Kinect for Windows SDK
Microsoft has released a beta SDK for Windows, allowing Windows developers to officially make use of the XBox Kinect hardware. From their own press release: "The Kinect for Windows SDK, which works with Windows 7, includes drivers, rich APIs for Raw Sensor Streams, natural user interfaces, installer documents and resource materials. The SDK provides Kinect capabilities to developers building applications with C++, C# or Visual Basic using Microsoft Visual Studio 2010."

More info on Call of Duty Elite revealed by Activision
This week's official announcement about Call of Duty Elite has sent some hardcore players of the Call of Duty shooter series into a frenzy, and not in a good way. The upcoming online service that will offer player stats, social networking features and more has been seen by some players as a way to get money out of them when they have previously played online for free. Now publisher Activision has posted up an FAQ about Call of Duty Elite that it hopes will quell some of the player's protests.

Research questions the educational possibilities of some TV and computer games
There is a considerable amount of interest among researchers, educationalists and from the games industry in the educational possibilities offered by video and computer games. Some of the arguments about this educational potential are about so called open-ended games, games where the players set their own goals or plans and chooses which way the game goes. Now a thesis from the University of Gothenburg reveals that as a mean to challenge pupils' ideas and values, then these open-ended games are not appropriate.

Why Do Metacritic Users Hate Modern Warfare 3?
Once more into the scandalous aggregation something-or-other, this time with Modern Warfare 3, which looks to be coming up red (but not roses) for players rating the game just hours after picking it up. While the Xbox 360 version's already garnered a critically acclaimed 90 out of 100 on Metacritic with 30 critics weighing in, the average user score's hovering closer to 3 out of 10.
