Hewlett-Packard has agreed to pay out $425,000 to settle claims regarding hazardous laptop incidents after the US Consumer Product Safety Commission charged the company for not issuing a recall quickly enough for knowingly selling laptops with batteries that could catch fire or overheat.
Dell has acknowledged the problem of broken hinges on some Alienware M11x laptops and is asking customers with the issue to contact the company for a resolution.
Instead of scanning fingerprints to determine a person is who they say they are (unless they're holding someone's dismembered finger, naturally), Fujitsu's vein sensor does the job...only in a much smaller device, measuring just 29mm wide, 11.2mm tall, and 29mm thick.
The Acer AS5253-BZ661 desktop replacement laptop is a compelling play on price and battery life, using a netbook-based AMD Fusion APU to lead the charge.
With excellent speeds, ample features, and good battery life, the Acer Aspire AS5742-6475 can be that primary laptop for a computer novice or secondary one for the family.
The Acer Aspire AS5750-9851 packs in a powerful Core i7 processor, perfect for the media consumer and those who like to dabble lightly in content creation. That aside, this laptop is fairly bare bones when it comes to features.
Home theater enthusiasts will love the Acer Aspire AS8950G-9839 laptop's big 1080p-resolution screen, built-in Blu-ray drive, and crisp-sounding speaker system, and the parts powering the system are impressive.
Acer has announced the Aspire Ethos AS5951G and AS8951G high-end multimedia notebook PCs, with 15.6- and 18.4-inch displays respectively, new Intel CPUs, GeForce graphics, and an interesting design feature.
The sleek aluminum MacBook Air-like notebook with a 13.3? display measures only 0.51 inches in profile and weighs slightly less than 3 pounds. It packs an Intel Core i7-2637M 1.7GHz dual core ultra-low voltage chip with integrated Intel HD graphics and will be also available with Core i5 and i3 ULV chips. The Aspire S3 3951 has 4GB of RAM, a 240GB solid state drive or a 320GB/500GB hybrid hard disk/SSD, and a battery that delivers "up to 7 hours" of battery life.
The S3-951-6646 configuration is a mid-range one, since it features the Intel Core i5-2467M 1.6GHz "Sandy Bridge" ultra-low voltage processor and the notebook will be also available with a Core i3 and i7. The 6646 model has a 320GB hard disk accompanied by a 20GB solid state drive for ultra-fast system wake up, as well as 4GB of RAM, and a claimed battery life of up to six hours with a 3-cell Lithium polymer unit. This and other ultrabooks use the Intel HD integrated graphics.
The Aspire S3 features a 13.3-inch display (1366x768 resolution), a 0.51-inch thin profile, weighs 2.98 lbs, and its chassis is made out of magnesium alloy. This is the first Ultrabook available with such a large SSD (typical Ultrabooks come with 128GB).
The Acer Aspire TimelineX 5830TG-6402 combines an Intel Core i5 processor, Nvidia switchable graphics, and all day battery-life to make it a smart buy for any budget.
Acer's new Aspire Ethos 8951G and 5951G laptops focus so much on entertainment that their touchpads are removable and double as media remotes so you can control your laptop from afar. Besides the distinctive touchpads, the new 18.4-inch and 15.6-inch Ethos laptops also boast decent specs for multimedia laptops, including: HD displays, Blu-ray writers, 5.1 channel surround sound, and backlit keyboards.
Engadget has posted a more detailed video overview of the 13.3? Acer Aspire S5 ultrabook. According to Engadget’s Dana Wollman, the S5 has a more uniform premium aluminum design than the current S3 and is also more thinner, measuring 15mm.
We have our heads in the clouds. Once a dream, cloud computing is now common and used to support everything from file sharing to email. Here at PC Perspective, for example, we often make use of Dropbox. Storing certain files "in the cloud" is much easier than directly emailing them to and fro.
The AC700 is Acer's first Chromebook launch. The device comes with an 11.6-inch HD LED-backlit LCD and features HDMI output for those who want to connect the device to an HDTV. The Chromebook weighs 2.95 pounds and comes in at just one-inch thick. Users can connect to the Web via Wi-Fi and work on the device for six hours on a single charge.
After almost a month's delay, the Acer AC700 Chromebook is now available for order -- and is shipping immediately. The late start, however, probably won't interfere too much with the AC700 catching up to the Samsung Series 5 Chromebook's early sales success. This Wi-Fi-only laptop is $80 cheaper than Samsung's while having similar features.
A little while back at Google I/O Google introduced the world to Chromebooks. Svelte machines that run Google's own OS, Chrome OS. Chrome OS is unlike any other OS that's hit the shelves. It's fast, lean, and easy to use. Chromebooks look to continue that theme. They are fast (relatively), lean, and easy to use.
Google's Chromebook will be officially available June 15 and a bevy of corporate pilots are likely to follow. After all, the Chromebook will at least warrant enterprise investigation given the potential costs savings.
Last Thursday morning, as I packed for a three-day trip to San Diego for Comic-Con, I couldn't decide whether to take my trusty first-generation MacBook Air, or use the trip as an excuse to review Samsung's Series 5 Chromebook, which I'd just received. So I didn't decide--I took both.
The Samsung Series 5 ChromeBook is a brilliant concept that might one day replace traditional laptops, but it's just not the best solution for most people at this time.
If you want a Windows laptop, get a Windows laptop. But, if you want an easy-to-use, Web-based laptop, consider getting a Chromebook. So long as you realize that the Samsung Series 5 and its brother from another company, the Acer Chromebook, is not a full-featured Windows or Linux notebook computer you'll be fine.
A beefy 15.6in laptop with a removable touchpad/remote control that looks superb, performs well and delivers long battery life, but it comes at a price.
The Acer Iconia 6120 A laptop with dual-screen laptop is as is a unique and innovative take on multitasking, but the virtual keyboard and Acer's touch software pack aren't ready for prime time.
Unlike a lot of other unique proof-of-concept laptops, the Acer Iconia is fun to use and largely works as advertised. But it has a hard time answering the most frequent question we hear about it: why would anyone need a dual-touch-screen
The available model is the Iconia W500-BZ467 which sports a ten-inch 1280 x 800 multitouch display with support for five-finger input, the AMD Fusion C-50 dual-core 1GHz processor with the Radeon HD 6250 graphics, a full HD video decoder, 2GB of DDR3 memory, a 32GB solid state drive, and Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit OS.
In this world of virtual this and virtual that, there comes a product that offers something really different than everybody else. The Iconia from Acer America is not a laptop nor is it a notebook. Acer is calling it a "touchbook" because it has no keyboard. The Iconia is a portable computer that open up like a clamshell-style notebook with a screen on the upper portion, but it also has another screen where the keyboard should be. That's right: It's a dual screen notebook.
Pick one up and you get 320GB of magnetic storage for data and such, but the 8481 also has a 64GB mSata form-factor SSD to quick-load the OS and your apps.
We can't call Acer's newly announced slimline 14in and 15in Aspire Timeline Ultra laptops 'Ultrabooks' - that's an Intel trademark for a well-defined class of machine.
Acer's American arm announced on Monday that the brand's first thin-and-light ultrabook, the Aspire S3, has landed in North America, and it will be available for $899.
It's happened again! Sincerest form of flattery, etc., etc. Leaked pics of Acer's rumored Aspire 3951 "looks very familiar" (is a complete clone of) the refreshed MacBook Air, both inside and out. SSD, Sandy Bridge, light and thin.
Acer on Monday shipped its Aspire S3 ultrabook starting at US$899, becoming the first to crack the $1000 price barrier in Intel's new category of thin and light laptops.
The all new Acer Aspire TimelineX series is available in three sizes -- the 13.3-inch 3830T, 14-inch 4830T and 15.6-inch 5830T -- each of which freature a redesigned notebook chassis and clean layout with a large touchpad and chiclet keyboard. These new laptops are powered by the second-generation "Sandy Bridge" Intel Core i5 and i3 processors to provide improved multi-tasking performance, a better video experience and longer battery life than previous generation laptops.
Acer has ploughed itself a nice furrow over the last few years, building nice-looking, well-made laptops. The 5830T might lack the instant recognition and wow-factor of the Apple MacBook Pro, but there's no arguing that it's a nice-looking system.
What little the Acer Travelmate 8441T-6440 business laptop gives up in horsepower, it gains back with a sleek, ultrabook-like design (low volt processor requires fewer clunky cooling fans) and over 11 hours of battery life.
ASUS hit a bit of a home run earlier this year with the Eee Pad Transformer, a relatively typical Android Honeycomb tablet with an excellent detachable keyboard dock. But what if you take the keyboard and attach it to the Transformer? That's basically what you've got with the ASUS Eee Pad Slider.
Full specifications of the Asus Eee PC Slider SL101 Android tablet with a physical slide-out keyboard have been published on the computer maker's website.
This is novel--Nokia may not have released any MeeGo phones in the end, but Asus' Eee PC X101 dualboots both Nokia and Intel's beleaguered MeeGo OS, or Windows 7. No ubiquitous Android or Linux here, folks.
ASUS has shrunk down its popular 17.3-inch G73 gaming notebook into a more manageable 15.6-inch size with the introduction of its G53SW. Is this travel-friendly gaming laptop as impressive as its bigger brother? We find out. Our ASUS G53SW-A1 review unit has the following specifications:
15.6-inch 1080p (1920x1080) glossy panel with LED backlighting
We've reviewed several gaming laptops here at PC Perspective, but strangely, we've usually reviewed systems with 15.6" displays or smaller. Although large by most any other measure, these laptops are actually small by the standards of gaming laptops. Many gamers prefer laptops with a display over 17 inches because the extra screen real estate results in a better gaming experience.
The Asus G74Sx gaming laptop, now available for advance order, boasts the latest hardware specs plus a refreshingly unflashy design. This new addition to Asus' Republic of Gamers series features a quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, Nvidia graphics card with 3GB of video memory, a 3D display option, and other features for hard core gamers -- without the spray-painted glossiness and showy lights of typical gaming laptops.
The Asus G74SX-A2 holds its own against top gaming laptops with its quad-core processor and Nvidia graphics, and its stealthy cooling system kicks in when those components get hot.
The Asus G74SX-BBK7's huge exterior speaks volumes: Intimidating to the casual consumer, but speaks to the gamer saying, "The bigger I am, the better I game.
This latest addition to the ASUS G-series gaming notebook lineup has fantastic performance, a great 15-inch 1080p screen, and a stealthy design. See why we recommend it.
With its angular look inspired by U.S. Navy's Sea Shadow stealth ship, and a keyboard that dares to slope from 0.8" to 2.4" for a more ergonomic typing angle, the G74Sx simply commands attention. And that's before we have a look under its hood.
The well equipped Asus K52JT-XT1R desktop replacement laptop runs toward the front of the pack with its quad-core processor, dedicated graphics card, and sub-$1000 price tag.
Since recently, the 15.6-inch Asus K53U series laptop is available with the AMD E-450 dual-core Accelerated Processing Unit, successor of the E-350. In this review, we will present our view of the laptop regarding its design, build quality, cooling, and computing and battery life performance.
The last three years have been great for ultraportables and netbooks. Laptops with displays below fourteen inches in size have exploded in popularity thanks not only to Intel's Atom, but also a wide selection of Intel ultra-low voltage products. Many of the laptops that we've reviewed over the past year, such as the Lenovo IdeaPad U260 and the Alienware M11x, would have been impossible prior to the release of those processors.
The K53E is ASUS' latest thin yet powerful 15.6-inch multimedia and general purpose consumer notebook. It features the latest Intel "Sandy Bridge" processors and a large 640GB hard drive. Keep reading to find out more. Our ASUS K53E-B1 review unit has the following specifications:
15.6-inch 720p (1366x768) glossy panel with LED backlighting
The Asus K53SV-B1 desktop replacement laptop packs high-end performance without the price tag, offering quad-core Intel Core i7 processing and powerful Nvidia GeForce graphics for under $1,000.
There are two Asus K73 models listed on computer maker's website -- the K73SV with the Nvidia GeForce GT 540M 1GB or 2GB video card and the K73E which runs on Intel's integrated GMA HD graphics. Both notebooks come with the dual-core Intel Core i3-2310M, i5-2410M and quad-core i7-2630QM processor, up to 750GB hard drive with Windows 7 pre-loaded, support for up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, and DVD burner or Blu-ray combo drive.
The new Asus Lamborghini VX7 laptop looks fast and runs faster. Packed with a 2 GHz Core i7 processor and 16 GB of RAM. More heat is under the hood in the form of a single USB 3.0 port and Bluetooth 3.0 along with wireless-N and gigabit networking. Tweaked for gaming, the VX7 is packing an nVidia GTX 460M graphics card with a ridiculous 3 GB of video memory. A Blu-ray drive and sound system round out the package nicely.
Here's one of those good news/bad news things: It looks like the ASUS Transformer Prime and its new quad-core Tegra 3 internals is proving to be quite popular. Too popular. So popular, in fact, that Amazon's canceling some preorders, citing a lack of availability.
Asus is rumored to be working on making the largest Android laptop to date: a 13-inch device with an attractive price tag under $299 and possibly a quad-core Nvidia processor. This cheap laptop, according to DigiTimes , may be expected as early as the end of 2011. Other computer manufacturers - Samsung, Toshiba, and Acer - are also expected to follow suit in introducing competitively priced ARM-based notebooks.
Asus is one of the biggest notebook makers in the world and now there's a new rumor that claims that the company is working on a new notebook with a swivel-screen design that will be ready in time for the launch of Windows 8.
Laptops are compromises. Despite continuing reductions in processor power draw and the physical size of hardware, there are still trade-offs that must be made. Batteries can be made larger to provide better portability, but this increases weight and size. Laptops can be made smaller, but this can make the user interface uncomfortable, and limits the hardware inside. Powerful processors and GPUs can be stuffed inside, but this increases weight and cost while it reduces battery life. And the list goes on and on.
The Asus N53SV-A1 desktop replacement laptop has more power than most people know what to do with, armed with a quad-core Core i7 processor and Nvidia's latest graphics gem.
The Asus N55SF-A1 is one of the best-sounding desktop replacement laptops in the business, thanks to some fine audio tuning and speaker hardware from Bang & Olufsen ICEpower. Its internal parts even outperform most of its peers in speed and gaming tests.
As a multi-media laptop the Asus NX90 is undoubtedly desirable but it's as big as a barge, weighs a ton and costs an arm and a leg. However, now you can get the same Bang & Olufsen sound system, full HD screen and the latest Sandy Bridge i7 processor in the altogether more practical N73.
One of the main features of thse Intel "Sandy Bridge"-based laptops is a bulit-in speaker system and an optional extrnal subwoofer, both co-developed with Bang & Olufsen. For visuals, there is the Nvidia GeForce GT 555M discrete video card and 720p display resolution in the Asus N45SF, as well as up to full HD in the N55SF and N75SF.
The X101 has a 10" display and is preloaded with the new Intel MeeGo operating system. It weighs just two pounds and measures 0.68 inches thin. The X101 is also light on specifications; it has 1GB of RAM, an 8GB SSD, and an Intel Atom N435 processor. It is designed for cloud computing; Dropbox online storage is pre-installed as is Google Chrome. Apps can be downloaded from the ASUS App Store.
I have got to be honest with you - most of the time getting me excited for graphics cards any more is a chore. Unless we are talking about a new architecture from NVIDIA or AMD, card vendors are hard pressed to the same attention from me they used to a couple of years ago when every card release was something to pay attention to. Over the next week or so though it turns out that ASUS and Gigabyte have a few noteworthy items definitely worth some grade-A analysis and reviewing starting with today's: the ASUS ROG Matrix GTX 580 beast.
The 13.3-inch Asus U24E is "the world's first 0.75-inch thin notebook with an Intel standard voltage CPU", and the U24E-XH71 configuration sports one of these processors -- the Intel Core i7-2620M 2.7-3.4Ghz dual-core.
The Asus U31JG-A1 is a slim little laptop that lasts all day on one charge. Features like Bluetooth and a backlit keyboard are great, but a flawed trackpad mars the overall package.
Asustek has revealed details of the Asus U43SD, an updated version of the 14-inch Bamboo Collection U43 which now includes 2nd Gen Intel "Sandy Bridge" processors.
While other mainstream laptops are putting in boilerplate parts, the Asus U46E-BAL5 raises the bar with excellent processing power and a glut of cutting-edge features.
The Asus U46E-BAL6 is a processing goliath, thanks to its quad-core processor, and it's only meant for those who abuse their laptops with high-end video and photo editing packages. No backlit keyboard. The Asus U46E-BAL6 is a mainstream laptop that caters to hardcore video editors or serious performance enthusiasts.
The Asus U56E-BBL5 laptop will give you future-proof internal and external components and several wireless connectivity options, all for a sweet price.
The Asus U56E-BBL6 budget laptop has all the desired features, including a fast Core i5 processor, cutting-edge features, and best-in-class battery life, sold for a price few can pass up.
It is available in the US in the form of the $429.99 Asus X54L-BBK4, which includes the 2nd Generation Intel Core i3-2330M 2.2GHz dual-core processor with the integrated Intel HD graphics, 4GB RAM, and a 500GB HDD, besides a DVD burner and 1366 x 768 screen resolution. The price tag is certainly not the lowest in the 15.6? category, but it's probably the cheapest one with a 2nd Gen Core i3 CPU.
The Asus Zenbook UX31-RSL8 is the clear leader in the nascent ultrabook category, with better overall performance and battery life than any competitor. It also has a brilliant display, superb sound, and solid construction.
That amount of RAM is big even for enterprise-class multi-CPU servers. It's enabled using Crucial's 24GB SODIMM 1333MHz CL9 memory kit, which includes three 8GB modules, populating all three memory slots in the notebook. However, we think that 24GB is an over-kill for gaming and other daily uses, but it could be of help in some memory intensive engineering, design, or multimedia applications, or for virtualization for instance.
What does a notebook need in order to claim the title of "world's fastest laptop"? The AVADirect Clevo X7200 steps up to the challenge with a six-core Intel Core i7-990X Extreme Edition processor, cutting-edge NVIDIA GeForce 580M graphics, 12GB of RAM and a blazing fast SSD. Will all that gaming performance keep your attention, or will this 13.5-pound notebook prove too much to bear?
It's a common problem--your shiny new laptop isn't looking so shiny or new anymore, and what's that? The battery barely holds a charge now? Ugh. I'm skeptical of Leyden Energy's claims, but would give their batteries a shot.
Leyden Energy has announced a new lithium-ion laptop battery that is said to hold its full charge for at least three years and will be backed by a three-year warranty. This is great news (if the claims are true), since most laptop batteries really suck.
What's the most important measure of any laptop? Some might say the processor speed, or the size and weight, but at the end of the day, it's got to be battery life.
Alleged specs for Dell's Alienware M11x ultraportable gaming laptop, expected in early April, have been leaked. According to sources at the site Dell News and More, this will be the third revision of the 11.6-inch-screen laptop and it will share the current R2 laptop's design while offering the new Intel Sandy Bridge processors.
Our Alienware M14x rumors from earlier in the week are looking that much more close to being confirmed: Chinese tech site Zol.com.cn has posted a full review of the alleged M14x here. The articles include a number of very clear photographs as well as component information. As for the vitals, this M14x R1 build has an Intel Core i7-2820QM processor (Sandy Bridge), 8GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce GT 555M graphics, 750GB drive, and a Cougar Point HM67 chipset.
The Alienware M14x is indeed "the most powerful 14-inch laptop in the universe" but that doesn't mean much when you can get a much better 15-inch or 17-inch gaming laptop for the same price.
Mounting evidence suggests that Alienware has three new gaming notebooks on the way. These would be the predictable release of the M11x R3 (the third edition of the M11x), a 14-inch M14x, and then the M18x, which would presumably have an 18-inch display. Over the past few weeks we've seen the rumor mill heat up, a full review of the M14x, and even leaks from Dell. And now we have even more on the M18x and the M14x, both from what appears to be an employee on Dell's own forums.
The M14x will include an Intel Sandy Bridge quad-core processor (the Core i7-2820QM), 8GB of RAM, a 750MB hard drive, and the new Nvidia GeForce GT 555M graphics card. A 1,920×1,080 resolution screen is an option, and the gaming laptop also features Klipsch premium speakers. While the M14x ships with Windows 7 Ultimate, the review highlights Alienware's AlienGUIse app, which allows users to customize the interface.
The Alienware M14x isn't your average laptop. Th base model of this portable gaming powerhouse starts at $1,099 (US). Our test model (2.4GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600MHz RAM, and 1.5GB Nvidia GeForce GT 555M GPU) retails for around $1,800. The machine measures 1.49" (H) x 13.27" (W) x 10.17" (D). It weighs a hefty (by laptop standards) 6.45 pounds.
Alienware's M17x gaming notebook has already been treated to the finer things in life with Intel's latest Sandy Bridge quad-core processors and now with Klipsch premium speakers too.
Alienware's working hard to fill out its gaming laptop lineup with options at every conceivable size. First, the M14x surfaced, and now it appears Dell's high-octane performance division is readying the M18x.
Over at Dell's support site, the company has a list of Alienware laptops, with one surprise: the M18x. We've been hearing rumors for some time about Dell releasing an 18-inch gaming notebook, but so far nothing has come to pass. The 18.4-inch computer would, according to rumor, come in at a larger size than the M17x, instead of replacing it.
Dell's Alienware gaming PC division has just put it's latest product on sale. It's the massive "desktop replacement" m18x gaming PC laptop. While it's not exactly made for extensive travel the M18x is designed to be an alternative for those folks who don't want a huge tower-case PC and monitor for their gaming needs.
We reported that some of our forum users were experiencing issues with their Alienware M18x notebooks and the Windows graphical interface. We're happy to announce Alienware took notice and has introduced a fix!
If you are familiar with Geek.com, you have most likely come across our coverage of the next in the line of Alienware's awkward looking, yet extremely powerful laptops. Today Alienware saw fit to confirm those rumors. Alienware's entire notebook line was refreshed today.
The Dell Inspiron 15R-2728MRB is a solid desktop replacement laptop offering Core i5 power, a Blu-ray drive, and a strong feature set. However, graphics performance is not its strong suit, nor is battery life.
The Inspiron 15R N5110 comes with the Core i3-2310M 2.1GHz or i5-2410M 2.3GHz dual-core CPU with the integrated Intel 3000 HD graphics, optional AMD Radeon HD6470 video card, up to 6GB of RAM, and up to 640GB of hard drive storage. Optical drive choices include DVD burner, Blu-ray combo drive, or Blu-ray writer.
The Dell Inspiron 17R (N7110) gives you some 3D performance, creative control of both your virtual media and the laptop's physical appearance, and features to make this desktop replacement laptop pop.
The Dell Inspiron 17R-1695MRB shows that chic doesn't necessary mean that it needs to be made of metal. This desktop replacement laptop also has a slew of creature comforts, all for a reasonable price.
The Dell Inspiron IM5030-874B3D is a fine-looking laptop with a compelling price, but you can get more capabilities from other systems without having to shell out a lot more money.
The Dell Inspiron i14RN4110-7616DBK offers the latest Core-13 technology and has a good selection of wireless options and I/O ports, but its performance is only so-so.
If you're looking for a basic laptop for your email, Web browsing, and video streaming, then the Dell Inspiron i14RN4110-8073DBK will provide. However, there are other laptops out there that you can get for $20 more that will give you more bang.
The Dell Inspiron i17R-6434DBK combines a rich feature set with a strong Core i5 processor providing plenty of productivity and entertainment options. There may be a few faults, but they are made up for by its low price.
The Dell Inspiron M501R-1748MRB is an affordable desktop replacement laptop based on AMD's Vision Premium technology. Its performance and battery life are subpar, but the addition of a Blu-ray drive lets you view HD movies on its bright LED backlit display.

For those that work in harsher environments than an office or classroom, there's the Latitude E6420 XFR, Dell's fully-rugged laptop built to go off the road and protect your data.
The Dell Latitude XT3 convertible business-class laptop with a 13.3-inch touch display, Intel Core "Sandy Bridge" processors, and Windows 7 OS is now available for purchase on the US market.
Dell is expanding the number of mobile broadband options for select Latitude notebook customers to encompass all four major mobile providers in the United States.

Dell has announced that its new Precision Mobile Workstations, the M4600 and M6600, will be available May 10 starting at just under $1,700. The newly announced Dell Precision 15.6" M4600 and 17.3" M6600 feature Nvidia Quadro and AMD FirePro workstation graphics cards and second-generation Intel processors. Both notebooks also offer up to 32GB of RAM as well as hard drive and SSD options. The M4600 will have up to two storage drives and the M6600 up to three with RAID 5 support.
As expected, Dell has joined the ultrabook foray, announcing the XPS 13 at Consumer Electronics Show 2012. Thin and lights aren't new for Dell, but joining the announce-now-and-ship-later CES crowd is disappointing. As a build-to-order maker, Dell is known for shipping right away. If you want an XPS 13, however, the Round Rock, Texas PC maker will make you wait until the "end of February".
Both the 13z (denoting a 13.3-in. widescreen display) and 14z (14-in. display) are offered with your choice of an Intel i3 or i5 processor. Both displays are rated at 720p HD resolution.
The 15.6-inch M4600 and 17.3? M6600 will ship with the 2nd generation Intel Core i7 Extreme quad-core processors, AMD FirePro Mobility and Nvidia Quadro dedicated video cards with up to 2GB GDDR5 video memory, Nvidia switchable GPU technology and AMD Eyefinity multi-display feature in select configurations, and up to 32GB of 1333MHz or up to 16GB of faster 1600MHz DDR3 RAM.
The power of the Dell Vostro 3350 small business laptop's second-generation Core i5 processor and more than hours of battery life are well-worth its budget-conscious price.
The Vostro 3550, as same as the other Vostros from the 2011 lineup, is based on Intel's 2nd Generation Core i3, i5 and i7 processors with dual CPU cores and features the integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 or hybrid GPU solution that combines the HD 3000 and the dedicated AMD Radeon HD 6630M 1GB. The laptop comes with up to 6GB of DDR3 memory, up to 500GB of hard drive space, and a DVD burner or Blu-ray combo drive.
Thanks to an Intel Core i5 processor and 8-hour battery, the Dell Vostro V131 small-business laptop has most of the features, power, and battery life of its enterprise-oriented counterparts, yet it won't cost you nearly as much.
Like big brother Dell XPS 15z, the XPS 14z obviously takes much inspiration from Apple's sleek MacBook Pro--with a couple of notable differences. First, there's the larger 14-inch HD (1366 pixels by 768 pixels resolution) display within the 13-inch footprint. This is accomplished, as you can see, by the smaller bevels, so the screen is nearly edge-to-edge on the laptop. This gives you 10 percent more viewing area than typical 13-inch laptops.
The Dell XPS 14z L412z is apparently ready to hit the USA market, because the PC maker has leaked details of the thin 14" laptop on its official website for the States.
Dell calls its new XPS 14z the thinnest "fully featured" laptop on the planet. It's super slim at 23 mm, has a great display, is a zippy performer and weighs less than five pounds. And now, it's America's own.
The XPS 15z (Microsoft) is available from Microsoft's Store and every bit as luxurious as the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch, but it won't cost you nearly as much.
Besides the LifeBook AH572 and AH531 15.6-inch consumer laptops, Fujitsu has made available the LifeBook P771 12.1-inch ultraportable, S751 14-incher, business-class 15.6? E751, and the NH751 17.3? multimedia-oriented desktop replacement.
Fujitsu has announced the Fujitsu Lifebook SH76/G thin and light notebook. The Lifebook SH76/G features a 13.3-inch 1366 x 768 display, an Intel Core i5-2450M processor at 2.50GHz, 4GB DDR3 of memory, a 128GB SSD, webcam, DVD burner, and Windows 7 Home Premium OS.
Fujitsu has released four new notebooks into the LifeBook lineage, including the LifeBook NH751 desktop replacement, E751 business notebook, S751 notebook, and the P771 ultraportable. All of the notebooks either offer or come built with Intel Core i7 CPUs (including the ultraportable).
While Nintendo's 3DS gaming device has hogged the 3D limelight of late, Fujitsu quietly began shipping its 3D-capable Lifebook AH572. This laptop's claim to fame is the dual function 15.6-inch widescreen display for both 2D and 3D (with 3D glasses) viewing. The Lifebook AH572 is now shipping for $999.
Besides its aluminum body and USB 3.0 ports, the Gateway ID47 laptop will attract eyes because of its display. Similar to LG's laptop, Gateway stretched and thinned the ID47 bezel to fit a 14-inch screen where a 13.3-inch display would normally reside.
The Gateway ID47H02u, a compact, powerful, and battery efficient mainstream laptop, crams in as much screen as it can fit into a compact frame and doesn't overcharge you for it.
Gateway has introduced its new 15.6-inch NV Series and 14-inch ID47 series laptop models, which have been updated with USB 3.0 for faster connectivity and the latest processors. Both the NV and ID lines feature second-generation Intel processors or, in the case of the NV55 Series, AMD's A-Series "Llano" processor.
Gateway took the wraps off of its new NV Series line of notebook PCs today with the latest AMD "APU" processors and discrete graphics. Is it finally possible to buy a good desktop replacement notebook for less than the cost of an iPad 2?
The Gateway NV50AS02u may not have the most robust processor, but everything about it--an ample feature set, good battery life, and solid typing experience--are what you would find in laptops that cost twice as much.
The Gateway NV59C70U desktop replacement laptop may fall into the budget-friendly price range, but it also takes a few cues from its more expensive competition, with its attractive design, an Intel Core i5 processor, and decent battery life.
The Gateway NV77H05u budget laptop will get you through email, Web pages, and the occasional extraneous task, just so long as it isn't high-end gaming. But you're limiting yourself to a laptop with fewer features and less horsepower than the competition.
The available models belong to the affordable desktop replacement segment and include the Intel Sandy Bridge-based NV77H05u with the Core i3-2310M processor, HD 3000 integrated GPU, 6GB RAM, and red chassis; and the AMD Fusion powered NV75S02u in black color with the quad-core A8-3500M Llano APU incorporating Radeon HD 6620G graphics and with 4GB RAM. The laptops have 640GB hard drives and DVD burners.
Today Getac announced the release of its upcoming military-certified rugged flagship notebook, the 15.6-inch X500. Getac's President Jim Rimay claims the X500 has "over twice the performance" of the Getac A790 and combines the features of the older B300 and M230 rugged notebooks.
The Getac X500 is built to last and offers a large number of options for customization. Unfortunately, battery life isn't as impressive as the rugged build quality.
The Gigabyte Booktop T1132N features a 11.6-inch 1366×768 multitouch swivel display, the Intel Core i5-2467M Sandy Bridge processor, nVidia GeForce GT520M 1GB graphics, up to 750GB HDD, 4GB RAM, Wi-Fi, 3.5G, USB 3.0, HDMI, and Windows 7 OS.
When Google first announced it had a limited supply of the Cr-48 laptops running Chrome OS to ship out, we though maybe a few hundred or a couple of thousand existed. What we didn't expect was that Google had ordered 60,000 of them.
HP has introduced a new entry-level 15.6-inch notebook, the 2000z. It features an AMD Fusion processor and up to 5.5 hours of battery life. The 2000z is available with both single- and dual-core AMD Fusion accelerated processing units (APU), which combine a processor and dedicated AMD Radeon 6310M graphics on a single chip. The available processors include the following:
Starting at $349.99, the HP 2000z is powered by AMD Fusion chips from Ontario and Zacate family. The basic configuration features the AMD Dual-Core C-50, with E-240 and E-350 options available, 2GB of RAM expandable to 4GB, 320-500GB HDD, a DVD burner, and a 6-cell battery for "up to 5.5 hours" of battery life. The display is glossy at 1366-by-768 pixels, and on the top of the LCD panel there's a built-in web camera.
A few months ago we posted our review of the HP ProBook 6360b, the latest addition to HP's "b" series notebooks and their first in a 13.3" form factor. Today we'll be looking at another business-class notebook from HP, the EliteBook 8460p. As its name suggests, this system is a step above the standard business-minded 6360b and as such, it's billed as a Large Enterprise Business product. The "professional" EliteBook retails for about $300 more than the ProBook, but is that premium worthwhile?
The HP EliteBook 8560p is a powerhouse business laptop, as its 15.6-inch widescreen and top of the line parts are there for powering through the most difficult tasks--and a modern look doesn't hurt either.
Earlier this year, Hewlett-Packard revamped its professional-grade notebooks inside and out. Now HP's EliteBook mobile workstations are getting the same treatment.
Other laptops may be slightly better performers, but good hardware choices, bundled software, and interesting features help the HP Envy 14 (Sandy Bridge) stand out.
The past couple of generations of MacBook Pro and MacBook Air laptops from Apple have focused on improving the internal components while keeping the high-design exterior largely the same. Hewlett-Packard is taking a similar path with its Envy line of laptops (which not coincidentally also start at $999). The 2011 version of the 14-inch Envy 14 trades up to a second-generation Intel Core i5 processor and adds USB 3.0 and an improved touch pad, built around Synaptics' ImagePad technology.
After years of computer journalists telling me -- erroneously, I hasten to add -- that my next desktop PC will be a laptop, it's pleasing to see manufacturers such as HP trying to make it happen.
The HP Envy 14 got PCWorld's highest recommendation and was, in fact, the laptop our laptop editor Jason Cross said he'd select for himself. The refreshed HP Envy 14 Beats Edition retains the same features as the previous model, except for the new 2.3 to 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5-2410M processor with AMD Radeon HD 6630 graphics (1 GB switchable graphics and up to 4GB total graphics memory).
HP's Envy 14 earned 4.5 out of 5 stars in our review, earning kudos for its "fantastic" performance and design. Our laptops expert, Jason Cross, called it a "joy to use." In fact, the HP Envy 14 Beats Edition is the laptop that he'd buy for himself (watch our video to learn why). The Beats Edition has the same specs and options as the Envy 14, but it has a sportier design and comes with a high-end headset. The Envy 14 Beats Edition usually starts at about $1100, but you can use coupon code NB6633 at the HP Home & Home Office store to knock $250 off the price.
The Llano APU and Sabina platform are included in the new 14" HP Pavilion dv4, 15.6" dv6, and 17.3" dv7 mainstream entertainment notebooks, as well as in the lower-end Pavilion G series 14" g4, 15.6" g6, and 17.3" g7.
Are you looking for an inexpensive sub-$500 notebook for basic home and office use? The 15.6-inch HP Pavilion g6 might just deliver the best bang for your bucks. We took an in-depth look at this budget laptop to see if you can save money and still buy an impressive new PC.
HP has removed the wireless carrier for users of its EliteBook business laptops with the launch May 9 of its DataPass service. DataPass works with HP notebooks using Gobi 3G integrated modems, and allows owners to buy data connectivity in blocks of data to fit the particular need.
The HP 635 looks the same as the Intel-based HP 630 and includes the AMD Zacate E-350 APU with dual 1.6GHz cores and Radeon HD 6310M graphics, or AMD Phenom II P360 2.3GHz or Phenom P650 2.6GHz dual-core processors paired with the Radeon HD 4250 GPU.
HP unleashed a wave of laptop upgrades, new business laptops, and even prepaid 3G data on Monday in an effort to woo both consumers and mobile professionals. The three refreshed HP laptops--the HP Pavilion dv4, HP Mini 210, and HP Envy 14--gain updated processors and upgrades like improved touchpads. The business-oriented laptops--ProBook 5330m and EliteBook 2560p and 2760p--will come with consumer-friendly features like Beats Audio for better sound quality and backlit keyboards.
Both are based on the Intel Pentium P6200 dual-core CPU and Intel HD graphics. The available 2000 configuration in the US is the Pavilion 2000-210US with 3GB RAM (down from 4GB in the offered 630 model). As same as it's business counterpart, it has a 320GB HDD, DVD burner, webcam, and Windows 7 Home Premium.
The ultraportable laptop competition is heating up, as HP is reportedly expected to be the first to launch laptops based on Intel's new Ultrabook category: slim, affordable laptops that may give Windows users decent alternatives to Apple's MacBook Air. DigiTimes says HP will be launching at least two Ultrabook models -- ahead of the Asus UX21, which is slated for September and the laptop Intel used to announce the new category in May.
HP today announced a new lineup of powerful mobile workstations, ideal for engineering, power-computing and content-creation customers who need the performance of a workstation with the portability and convenience of a notebook.
Verizon today announced that the 11-inch HP Pavilion dm1-3010nr ultraportable notebook will be available with Verizon's 4G LTE network on July 28. For a monthly rate, the Verizon 4G network offers download speeds of 5 to 12 Mbps and upload speeds of 2 5 Mbps.
The HP Pavilion dm1 is now available with integrated 4G LTE from Verizon Wireless. I have taken it for a test drive and find it to be a solid notebook for travelers.
There have been plenty of 11-inch AMD-powered ultraportables this year, but HP's Pavilion dm1z was the first, and this updated version puts it back in the lead in this crowded category.
The HP Pavilion dm4-2015dx is a sturdy Core i3 mainstream laptop with a sizable hard drive and better than average battery life, but it's missing a few key features.
The HP Pavilion dm4-2033cl is an attractive laptop with next generation components. However, it's missing features, like USB 3.0 ports, that are finding their way into other mainstream laptops.
Its laid-back appearance distinguishes the HP Pavilion dm4-2070us from other midrange laptops, but in terms of processing performance and battery life this system is undistinguished.
Choosing an HP notebook isn’t an easy task, not because they are hard to find - far from it - it’s just the bewildering choice of notebooks you can find in a range. Take the recently refreshed Pavilion dv6-6b series, for example. There are currently a staggering 16 different options in this family alone.
In terms of looks, features, and cost, the HP Pavilion dv6-6013cl was already a great laptop, but the addition of a second generation Intel processor and dramatically improved graphics and gaming capability make it a winner.
The HP Pavilion dv6-6033cl laptop offers solid performance, Intel's Sandy Bridge technology, and a two-year warranty in a durable 15-inch chassis, but you can get similar performance and features for less money elsewhere.
The HP Pavilion dv6-6110us is an AMD-based desktop replacement that delivers better-than-average graphics performance for a budget notebook. It will give you six hours of battery life, but it's light on features and the CPU can't keep up with the competition.
The HP Pavilion dv6-6113cl is a reasonably priced desktop replacement laptop with a tough exterior and plenty of storage. It's a decent performer, but there are better deals to be had in this price range.
For budget buyers unwilling to compromise on design, the HP Pavilion dv6-6123cl delivers sleek aluminum styling along with a long-running battery, big audio, and a generous warranty for cheap.
The HP Pavilion dv6-6135dx desktop replacement laptop delivers above-average graphics for a budget laptop, but is a subpar performer on productivity and multimedia tasks.
The HP Pavilion dv6-6145dx laptop certainly offers a mixed bag, with excellent graphics performance, but lackluster processing power. Some will find it a compelling offer, while others will be turned off.
The HP Pavilion dv6-6153cl gives you an Intel Core i7 processor and AMD switchable graphics for under $1,000, but you don't get features like WiMAX, Bluetooth, and Blu-ray as part of the bargain.
With a great design, strong performance, long battery life, and a two-year warranty, the HP Pavilion dv6-6163cl is about as well-rounded 15.6-inch desktop replacement as you'll find.
The HP Pavilion dv6-6170us rivals some of the best desktop replacement laptops we've seen, offering quad-core performance and strong graphics for less than premium-priced laptops, but it has to trim a few of the finer features to do so.
High style, strong performance, and big sound highlight the versatile HP Pavilion dv6-6173cl, a 15.6-inch desktop replacement that would be good for your home.
The HP Pavilion dv6t Select Edition laptop has some great components, like an Intel Core i5 processor and AMD Radeon graphics chip, and premium features like WiDI 2.0 and Beats Audio.
The HP Pavilion dv6t is a solid improvement on HP's previous 15-inch mainstream consumer laptop with numerous tweaks, bells, and whistles, but the wide variety of options means you'll get wildly different systems based on what you can afford.
Customers have five APU choices, ranging from the entry A6-3400M at 1.4GHz to A8-3530MX top-line part at 1.9GHz. These are only stock clock speeds which can be increased on some cores to 2.3 and 2.6GHz respectively via AMD's Turbo technology.
The HP Pavilion dv7-6135dx is a smart mix of solid construction, strong performance, and all-day battery life. You'd never guess it was half the price of some competing systems.
Those looking for a portable home entertainment solution need search no longer. The HP Pavilion dv7-6143cl is a media center laptop that provides multiple wired and wireless solutions to connect you and your living room to digital content--and it's not too bad at gaming either.
With a roomy display and a good selection of hardware, the HP Pavilion dv7-6163us offers more than a typical mainstream system--but a full-blown (and full-powered) desktop replacement it is not.
The HP Pavilion dv7-6b55dx is a solid desktop replacement laptop that adds enticing wireless features, like WiDi 2.0 and WiMAX 4G broadband, underneath its sleek aluminum chassis.
The HP Pavilion g7-1033cl laptops performs as well as the best of its budget priced peers, and while it's not as cheap as some alternatives, Costco includes perks that more than make up for the difference in cost.
The HP Pavilion g7-2160us is a budget-priced laptop equipped with a Core i3 processor, big screen, and large hard drive, for a fairly low price. It's great, so long as you can accept a limited feature set.
Choosing a laptop can be an overwhelming experience if you don't keep up on the latest and greatest technologies. With new processors coming out all the time, integrated vs. discrete graphics options, and many more features, choosing the right laptop for yourself or your company can be a difficult task.
The HP ProBook 4430s offers the parts and package to get work done without blowing your company's budget. Strong security, a work-horse Intel Core i3-2310M processor, and a look that's all business make this a laptop worth considering.
The ProBook 4530s is based on Intel's "Sandy Bridge" processors, ranging from the dual-core i3-2310M to quad-core i7-2630QM. These CPUs include the Intel HD 3000 graphics, which is the only available GPU option on this notebook. The laptop comes with up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, up to 750GB of hard drive capacity, and a DVD burner or Blu-ray combo optical drive.
Tiger Direct has revealed its Cyber Monday deals. Among them, we like the HP ProBook 4530s XU073UT Core i5 15.6-inch business laptop offer with a price of $550.
The solid, no-surprises HP ProBook 6360b is a well-priced 13-inch laptop with up-to-date specs, but it's nothing that a consumer couldn't get in a better-looking design somewhere else.
The ProBook 6360b is the latest addition to HP's "b" series notebooks and their first in a 13.3" form factor. It's tailored for business professionals with a robust software suite including HP ProtectTools, Power Assistant and QuickWeb. Users will also appreciate the secure display latch, extended life battery options and docking station capabilities.
Lenovo offers two versions of its Essential line of lower-priced laptops. The B series is described as "budget laptops for working at home or at the office," while the G series is pitched as "everyday laptops at a great price." What that means in practical terms isn't entirely clear, as the B and G Essential laptops we've checked out use the same Intel Core i5 2410M processor and have the same amount of RAM and hard-drive capacity, they just have different screen sizes and some design differences. Here we'll focus on the Essential G570.
The Lenovo IdeaPad S205 is a speedy, oversized netbook that can serve as primary laptop, but this configuration is a bit pricey compared to others in its class.
The Lenovo IdeaPad S205 is a speedy, oversized netbook that can serve as primary laptop, but this configuration is a bit pricey compared to others in its class.
What’s interesting regarding the specifications listed on Vatgia.com is that the T430s is claimed to have the Intel Core i5-3320M 2.6GHz processor, which is supposed to be Intel’s next-gen standard voltage chip for non-Ultrabook laptops. U
The Ultrabooks are coming, and Lenovo's first model is looking really sweet. The IdeaPad U300s is as thin as can be and fast as lightning. It is presented in photos for this quick look.
We've long waited for an affordable Windows alternative to the MacBook Air, and while Lenovo's new IdeaPad U300s looks great, it doesn't appear to be competing on price in the soon-to-be-crowded Ultrabook market. The hardware specs of this 13.3-inch laptop matches the MacBook Air fronts, is arguably thinner, and starts at a reasonable $1200 (about $100 less than the entry-level 13-inch Air). Though the price compares favorably to Apple's ultralight laptop, there are other manufacturers targeting sub-$1000 prices for some Ultrabook models this fall.
From a distance, the Lenovo U260 would be easy to mistake for a tall, slender book. This is a trait that Lenovo intended, and it's accomplished by applying color to both the lid and the bottom of the laptop and also applying color to a thin ridge of plastic along the sides. Our review unit arrived in Mocha, and while I'd hesitate to call the laptop beautiful, it does have a minimalist allure.
The Lenovo IdeaPad U300s, Lenovo's entry into the ultrabook arena, is as well-engineered as you'd expect, but it's not a knockout blow to its competitors.
Their first ultrabook has a 13.3" 1366×768 display, as well as Core i7-2677M or i5-2457M ULV CPU, 4GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of solid state storage, all packed into a 0.6" thin all-aluminum chassis. The weight with the standard 4-cell battery (providing "up to 8 hours" of productivity) is 2.9 pounds.
The Lenovo IdeaPad U400 offers good looks and good performance at a fair price, but an average screen and lack of media card reader might kill the deal.
The Lenovo IdeaPad U260 is a lightweight, durable, and attractive laptop and is excellent for business professionals who don't wish to lug around a heavy laptop, yet still desire solid performance.
A sharp-looking mainstream laptop with decent graphics and some configuration flexibility, the IdeaPad Y570 is a solid alternative to some of the better-known consumer laptop brands.
Lenovo raises the bar for style with three new luxury laptops, the IdeaPad U300s Ultrabook, and the U300 and U400 laptops. These ultraportable notebooks are designed for fashion-conscious PC users who want a well-equipped laptop with the latest technology and good looks to boot.
The instant-on feature of tablets and smartphones is one reason why people love them. Laptop users could definitely benefit from faster boot up as well, since every second counts these days.
The 14-inch L420 and 15.6-inch L520 contain materials made from post-consumer recycled content and come in 100% recyclable packaging. The laptops feature dual-core CPUs, up to the Core i7-2620M, Intel HD integrated graphics, up to 6GB of DDR3 memory, up to 500GB hard drive or a 128GB solid state drive, a DVD burner, 6- or 9-cell battery, and screen resolution of 1366×768 pixels, with optional 1600×900 screen in the L520.
The ThinkPad E420s is a consumer-oriented ThinkPad with a 1-inch thin chassis, a weight of just 4 pounds, and more than 6 hours of battery life. If that isn't enough to spark your interest, it has a starting price around $700. Read our full review for all the details. Our Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E420s review unit has the following specs:
14-inch "edge to edge" glossy display (1366x768 resolution)
Both starting at $549, the affordable 15.6-inch Edge E525 and 14? E425 are based on the AMD Fusion A-series Llano CPU and graphics technology and come with up to 750GB of hard drive space and maximal 8GB of RAM.
Balancing between ultraportable and full-size laptop, the 12-inch ThinkPad Edge E220s offers an exceedingly compact computing experience matched by an upscale design, marred only by a subpar battery life.
The L-series ThinkPad is an eco-friendly business notebook made from post-consumer recycled content. Read our review to see if the 14-inch Lenovo ThinkPad L420 measures up to the ThinkPad standards for durability and performance. Our Lenovo ThinkPad L420 review unit has the following specifications:
14-inch 720p (1366x768) anti-glare display with LED backlighting
The Lenovo ThinkPad T420s is an amazing device when you realize that its power, feature set, and battery yields are usually found in much heavier laptops.
If you're looking for a thin and light 14-inch business notebook, what better person to ask about it than someone who owns several? Keep reading to find out what one of our regular contributors has to say about the ThinkPad T420s. The specifications of my ThinkPad T420s (model 4171CTO) are:
Processor: Intel i5-2520M CPU (2.5GHz with TurboBoost to 3.2GHz, 3MB cache)
Chipset: Intel QM67
Screen: 14.0 inch anti-glare 1600 x 900 WXGA+ LED Backlit
Memory: 1 x 2GB DDR3-1333 PC-10600 RAM (Samsung, 9-9-9-20) (to be upgraded)
According to specification sheets published in a document on the PC maker's website, the Lenovo ThinkPad T520 comes with the Core i5-2410M, i5-2520M, i5-2540M, or i7-2620M processor, all with dual CPU cores. The business notebook features the integrated Intel HD graphics or the Nvidia Optimus switchable GPU solution combining the Intel HD with the 1GB NVIDIA Quadro NVS4200M dedicated video card. There are also up to 8GB of DDR3 memory, a solid state drive or traditional hard drive, and the Ultrabay, which can be filled with an optical drive, secondary HDD or other Ultrabay-compatible parts.
The Lenovo ThinkPad W520 is made for designers and engineers and packs higher-end Intel 2nd Generation Core laptop CPUs, including the dual-core i5-2540M and i7-2620M, and quad-core i7-2720QM, i7-2820QM, and Extreme Edition i7-2920XM. Dual-core W520 models have two SO-DIMM slots, while quad-core models have four, supporting up to 8GB and 16GB of DDR3 RAM, respectively.
In this review we will measure the ThinkPad W520 up with other workstations in its class by putting every specific detail of it to the test. Read on to find out if this is the laptop for you. Our Lenovo ThinkPad W520 Specifications:
15.6-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) LED backlit display, 95% color gamut, matte, 16:9 ratio
Lenovo's decision to back out on the ThinkPad X301 may have just been a temporary measure as a pair of Swiss stores have prematurely shown a sequel built more consciously to take on the new MacBook Air. Billed as the ThinkPad X1, it would switch to a 160GB solid-state state drive to slim down to about 0.85 inches at its thickest point. The system would try to bring over Lenovo's reputation for strong designs by making its 13.3-inch display cover out of jab- and scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass.
Lenovo refers to their ThinkPad X1 as a crossover computer. Made for the business set, the Intel Core i7 processor packed into its 0.67-inch body will appeal to a more consumer crowd as well. This wants to go mainstream.
The ThinkPad X130e is powered by either AMD Fusion E-300 and E-450 or Intel Core i3-2637M ULV processors, with integrated AMD Radeon and Intel HD graphics, respectively. It supports up to 8GB of RAM and will ship with hard or solid state drives with Windows 7 pre-loaded.
The Lenovo ThinkPad X220 is an amazing piece of engineering when you factor in all the features it squeezed into a 12-inch frame, including best-in-class battery life and the new Intel Core i5 i5-2520M CPU.
New Lenovo ThinkPad ultraportable laptops are headed your way in April, sporting Intel's speedier Sandy Bridge processors, longer battery life and improved graphics. Lenovo has announced that the ThinkPad X220 will be available as a standard 12.5-inch laptop or convertible tablet with starting prices at $899 and $1199, respectively. Lenovo has also squeezed in new features such as an optional USB 3.0 port, a 45 percent larger trackpad and a maximum 8GB DDR3 RAM.
Apple has a reputation for attractive, thin laptops with the MacBook Air line, while Lenovo has a solid business reputation with its ThinkPad products. The distinction between the two is blurring, thanks to the release today of the ThinkPad X1, the most ultraportable notebook in the ThinkPad product line. The ThinkPad X1 combines a thin, light form with new technology to produce a notebook that competes firmly with the MacBook Air.
A surprisingly thin Lenovo ThinkPad X1 has just joined the ultra-thin laptop race, marrying the classic business sense of the ThinkPad line with the super sexy form of Apple's MacBook Air and its latest ultra-slim laptop competitors, the Samsung Series 9 and MSI X-Slim X-370. The unannounced ThinkPad X1 popped up for pre-sale in Europe and has been confirmed by internal Lenovo documents to be just 21.5mm (0.85 inches) thin and boast a fast-charging, long-life battery.
The company's decision to start manufacturing laptops again is a positive sign for the market, considering the slow patch PC sales have run into of late.
On paper, the P430 and P530 seem relatively similar with the exceptions of display size and weight. Both are fairly light as the 14-inch P430 and 15.6-inch P530 weigh 4.3 lbs. and 4.9 lbs. respectively. Otherwise, the specs that have been announced so far include:
The Xnote Z330 has a smaller footprint than standard 13.3" notebooks, thanks to 8mm thin LCD bezel. The ultrabook is 14.7mm thin and weighs 1.21kg. Inside the Z330 there are Intel’s Core i5-2467M or Core i7-2637M CPUs, 4GB of system memory, and a 120GB or 256GB solid state drive.
LG has just announced their entry to the Ultrabook category, the 13.3? Xnote Z330. While the outside cover has a concentric circle, etched pattern similar to that of the ASUS Zenbooks, the overall look of the Xnote Z330 resembles that of a MacBook Pro/Air.
Maingear this week announced a 3D gaming laptop with an overclocked 4.8GHz processor, in a bid to gain the extreme laptop performance crown from rivals.
Just weeks before we are supposed to see the first commercial processors with 3D transistor structures, researchers from Purdue and Harvard announced that they succeeded in the development of a transistor that uses nanowires with indium-gallium-arsenide
Acer, Gateway, and Lenovo have made available new laptops with AMD Llano Accelerated Processing Units. The notebooks are mainstream and affordable systems with 15.6" displays.
At first glance, AMD's 'Llano' CPU and Intel's 'Sandy Bridge' second-generation Core i platform look like blood brothers. They combine the CPU, a GPU and a memory controller all on a single 32nm die.
AMD is preparing chipsets for thin laptops that would cost up to $200 less than an Intel-powered Ultrabook, according to a Digitimes report. If you liked the idea of the Intel Ultrabook platform with its good performance and very thin and ultraportable form factor at price of under $1000 I am sure you weren't alone. The idea of a notebook with these features was very intriguing. We had heard that Intel was subsidizing the machines heavily and they would be on the market soon at that magic under $1000 price point. Apparently, the price isn't going to be delivered in the sub-$1000 range we had hoped for.
In this article we will take a look at two of the hottest Ultrabooks on the market. Both feature a 13.3-inch screen and fast flash storage, but do the extra features of the ASUS Zenbook make it worth a few hundred dollars more? Which is the best Ultrabook for your money?

The folks over at Intel have come up with an interesting prediction, one that may make all of you feel a little bit foolish for buying a laptop, and a netbook or a tablet. They are predicting that as time goes on the form factors in the mobile device market will break down and the distinctions between the devices will be largely a moot point. Companies will instead make multi-purpose smart computing devices.

I still can't figure out why Microsoft and Intel are holding their annual developer confences at the same time in different parts of California. I chose to attend Microsoft's BUILD. But interesting stuff is being shown at Intel's IDF, too--including an upcoming processor that will supposedly be capable of powering a laptop for 24 hours on a charge, not to mention being able to run off solar power.
The worlds of computers and the environment usually do not mix, it's by inheritance given the power and materials needed to make modern day computers work as we want them to. Some have attempted to address environmental concerns before, such as laptops that were made out of wood instead of plastic, but how about a laptop that was powered solely by the sun?
During a recent shopping trip to Best Buy, we checked to see if any Brazos-based notebooks were available. We only found only two systems: Gateway's NV51B08u and Toshiba's Satellite CS655D. Samsung's Series 9 laptop is the first real dart thrown at the MacBook Air; it's lighter, it's thinner, it's faster, and it looks gorgeous. Looks like Samsung's not going to match Apple on price, though. The 13-inch Series 9 starts at $1,650, fifty bucks more than the most expensive Air and a full $350 more than Apple's base model. And while you can argue that Samsung's fit some better specs in, it's not clear that you'd really ever need more than what the MacBook Air offers outside of hardcore professional use--which it looks the Series 9 can't handle either.
The Samsung 300U1A-A01 packs laptop performance into a netbook-size chassis, perfect for students and people on the go, but it faces some tough competitors.

The Samsung QX410-S02 mainstream laptop is beautifully made and reasonably priced, but it's still in need of Intel's Sandy Bridge platform and a better clickpad.
The Samsung QX411-W01UB mainstream laptop is cheaper than its predecessorby $200 and cranks out great battery life, but it loses the nVidia graphics subsystem and extra storage space.
Samsung is not a name that the majority of people know, at least in regards to computers. When you think of Samsung, usually the first thing that pops into your head is "HDTV". They are primarily a electronics/appliance company, not a computer company. Yet if you go to Samsung's website, you see a whole lineup of notebooks (twenty-three to be exact). That does not include netbooks, or even their new Chromebook. In fact, some of the other notebook models still available and still supported are not even shown on their website. Samsung does not sell notebooks directly, rather it sells them through retailers (online and physical).
Available models in the US are the 15.6" Samsung RF Series RF511-S02 with the Intel Core i7-2630QM quad-core 2.00GHz CPU, and 17.3" RF711-S01 with the dual-core i5-2410M 2.30GHz chip. Both laptops have Nvidia Optimus switchable graphics technology, including the Intel HD integrated graphics and the GeForce GT540M 1GB video card. Also, the systems have 4GB of DDR3 memory, and a 500GB hard drive. The RF511 comes with a DVD burner and 1366 x 768 display resolution, whereas the RF711 sports a Blu-ray combo drive and a 1600 x 900 screen.
It's not unusual for desktop replacements to have a bit of heft, but Samsung's RF711 positively throws caution to the wind. Tipping the scales at an obese 2.9kg and measuring 416mm across (almost one-and-a-half feet), it's only a laptop in the sense that the screen folds down to cover the keyboard when you've finished using it. In short, it looks like a prop from The Borrowers -- use it on your lap and you can expect to lose circulation to your feet.
The Samsung RV520-W01 budget laptop delivered excellent battery life and a glut of new age wireless technologies, but it's lacking a bit in terms of design.
Desktop replacement laptops are a genre of portable computer apparently intent on chuntering on forever without ever truly succeeding or dying. By nature, they tend not to be petite, and Samsung's RV720 is no exception.
Sony has announced refresh of their laptop line, including new configuration and color options for the VAIO Z, new internals choices for the S and E series, and new finish designs for the VAIO C.
Sony's Vaio S laptop series has been getting some updates over the last few months, but now the notebook collection has been revamped with a lighter and more powerful model. Some of the other big customizable specs available on this machine include:
Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0
Up to 8GB of DDR3 SDRAM
AMD Radeon HD 6630 1GB Hybrid Graphics card
Up to 750GB HDD or dual-channel 256GB SSD with RAID 0 technology
Today Sony unveiled the 13.3-inch VAIO S Series laptop line, similar to the C Series line announced on Feb. 22, but there are key differences with these smaller-sized notebooks. Sony did not mention a second generation Intel Core i7 processor option with the C Series models, but they will officially be available in this line, along with Core i5 and Intel Turbo Boost 2.0. Select models will have a 1GB AMD Radeon HD 6630 graphics card like the select VAIO C Series models, and will have a few similar built-in features.
Hot on the heels of announcing two Android tablets, Sony has given us a sneak peek at two interesting Vaio systems: one is a touchscreen tablet/laptop slider dubbed the "Freestyle Hybrid PC" and the other is an ultra-thin "Ultimate Mobile PC."
Sony has introduced a new 16-inch F Series laptop and a thinner and lighter S Series as part of its VAIO lineup. Both laptops are available for preorder now with second-generation Core i7 processors and high-end features for multimedia enthusiasts.
The VAIO C laptops feature a colorful design, the 2nd Generation Intel Core i5-2410M or i5-2540M processor, AMD Radeon HD 6630 1GB hybrid graphics or Radeon HD 6470M 512MB GPU, up to 8GB of RAM, up to 750GB of hard drive space, optional Blu-ray drive, and full HD display choice on the 15.5-incher.
The new notebooks sport Intel "Sandy Bridge" Core and Pentium processors and replace the previous EA, EB, and EC models with the previous generation Intel "Arrandale" chips.
Sony's Vaio line of laptops, including the midpriced EB series, look great and include some high-end features--we just wish the CPU had been updated for the sake of better battery life.
The Sony VAIO VPC-EG27FM/W mainstream laptop packs a Core i5 processor, a Blu-ray drive, and the latest wireless technologies into its slightly bulky 14-inch frame, but doesn?t offer any high-speed I/O ports.
The updated Sony VAIO F (VPCF2000X series) comes with the quad-core Core i7-2630QM, i7-2720QM, or i7-2820QM processor, up to 8GB of RAM, and an up to 640GB hard drive or 512GB solid state drive. The 3D F Series comes with Nvidia's 3D Vision technology, the Nvidia GeForce GT 540M 1GB dedicated video card and a Blu-ray player or burner, while the 2D version additionally provides GeForce GT 520M 512MB and DVD burner options, but lacks 3D Vision.
The Sony VAIO VPC-F236FM is a laptop powerhouse. You can rely on its Intel Core i7 CPU and Nvidia GT 540M to get the job done, whether that 'job' may entail gaming or manipulating images in Photoshop.
A bold color scheme and solid performance makes the Sony VAIO VPC-EA46FM/V mainstream laptop stand out in a crowd, but its graphics performance will scare away the gaming crowd. Still, it has a generous feature set and will handle your multimedia and productivity workload without a hitch.
The Sony VAIO VPC-EG16FM is a mainstream laptop that targets movie enthusiasts, thanks to the Blu-ray drive, excellent horsepower, and technologies that can get those flicks onto the big screen.
The multiple wireless features put the Sony VAIO VPC-EH14FM/B over the top, compared to other laptops in the sub-$700 range. However, there are laptops out there with better performance numbers and similar features for slightly less.
The Sony VAIO VPC-F226FM/B offers plenty of processing muscle, thanks to an Intel Core i7-2630QM quad-core processor, and pairs it with a plethora of features and media options, like a 1080p display and a Blu-ray drive.
The Sony VAIO VPC-F237FX/B is a potent quad-core desktop replacement laptop that targets multimedia buffs with a striking 1080p screen and special video- and music-editing software.
The Sony VAIO VPC-SE16FX/S laptop is a compelling package, with a commuter-friendly thin design, a gorgeous high-definition display, and a potent combination of processing and graphics hardware.
Despite accounting for every cutting edge feature, component, and sporting an ultra-sleek profile, the Sony VAIO VPC-Z214GX ultraportable laptop still came away with too many drawbacks.
Seagate is now shipping the second generation of Momentus XT, its groundbreaking solid state hybrid drive for consumer and commercial laptops and the company’s fastest drive ever for personal computers. With a simple drive upgrade, users can boost boot-up speed and overall performance to turbo-charge their laptop PC.
Sony has dressed up its latest supermodel laptop and when it comes to the catwalk of consumer electronics, there are no moral complications in supporting the ultra-skinny.
Sony's high-end Z series laptop lives up to its luxury reputation, with a slim, lightweight body, plenty of processing power, and a highly specialized GPU dock.
This slim, MacBook Air-like laptop may only be destined for Europe, but it has a clever trick up its sleeve. Cramming its Blu-ray drive inside the power media dock, the two devices are linked to one another by high-speed Thunderbolt.
It's time to replace that pathetic little hard drive that came with your laptop. We reviewed two of the latest one terabyte laptop hard drives: the Samsung Spinpoint M8 and the Western Digital Scorpio Blue to see which one is best.
Previously, if you wanted more than 750GB of storage in a laptop, you had to choose one of usually larger than average notebooks with dual HDD bays. Now it's possible to get 1TB of capacity in a single-bay laptop, thanks to the Samsung Spinpoint M8 HN-M101MBB and WD Scorpio Blue WD10JPVT.
You want a performance-oriented SSD in your notebook, but you also need the capacity of a hard drive. Why not just remove your optical drive, drop your hard drive into its bay, and load up a brand new SSD with Windows and your apps?
SanDisk Corporation today introduced two new solid state drives (SSDs) for the mobile computing market. The U100 drive, successor to the popular SanDisk P4 modular SSD series, delivers a flexible, cost-effective solution for ultra-thin notebooks. The SanDisk iSSD integrated storage device series' i100 drive is the world's smallest, fastest 128 gigabyte (GB) (SATA III) BGA (ball grid array) SSD and an ideal storage solution for slim, powerful tablets and ultra-thin notebooks.
Samsung Electronics just announced its brand new line of internal solid state drives (SSDs) designed for consumer laptops and desktops, the Samsung SSD 830 series, will be available in October of this year.
Toshiba enters the nascent 1-terabyte laptop hard drive market with the company's first 2.5-inch 1TB HDD, the MQ01ABD. The drive has an industry-standard 9.5mm height and uses two 500GB platters.
WD has announced it is shipping its Scorpio Blue 1TB capacity hard drive for notebooks. This Advanced Format spinning disk spins at 5,400rpm, has an 8MB cache and a 3Gbit/s SATA interface. WD claims it is the highest capacity 2.5-inch hard drive available for mainstream notebook use.
Western Digital today announced that the company is now shipping its 1TB capacity SATA III Scorpio Blue internal hard drives with a slimmer form factor. The new form is 9.5 mm, 500GB per platter and it fits 2.5-inch hard drives, which is the size designed for many mainstream notebooks.

To wit, behold HP's $349 Pavilion g4-1104dx. In addition to goodies like a 14-inch LED display, 4GB of DDR3 memory, a 320GB hard disk drive, a multiformat optical drive, a Webcam, and integrated Ethernet, you get a Pentium processor B940 with integrated Intel graphics silicon.
Toshiba has introduced the Qosmio F750, the world's first 3D laptop that doesn't require special glasses for watching movies or playing games in 3D. Like the Qosmio T851/D8CR model Toshiba announced in April, the Qosmio F750 can also do simultaneous 2D and glasses-free 3D on its 15.6-inch display. I haven't checked out the laptop myself, but early reviews indicate that Toshiba's glasses-free 3D actually works very well.
The L735D doesn't look overly impressive on the hardware front, but then that's probably not a top priority. An AMD E-300 1.3GHz processor is coupled with a 320GB hard drive and a 13.3-inch display (with the unusual resolution of 1300 x 708). There's also a built-in webcam and microphone for video chat. The amount of RAM isn't specified, but the L730, which this laptop is clearly based on, carries 4GB as standard so we hope it's the same in the L735D.
When people ask me for recommendations about highly portable Windows notebooks, I'm quick to mention Toshiba's Portégé R700--a reasonably-priced three-pounder that has a 13.3? screen and even manages to pack a DVD burner into its trim, good-looking case. Today, Toshiba is announcing the R700's successor--as well as two larger notebooks and a unique portable display. The company recently gave me a preview of its new wares.
Toshiba announced on Tuesday its new range of slim, high-performance laptops geared towards business professionals, the Portege R830, Tecra R840, and Tecra 850. These Tecra and Portege laptops were reengineered from the ground up to be more portable than their predecessors, utilize second-generation Intel processors, and offer configuration options like solid state drives and optional discrete graphics.
The Toshiba's flagship gaming laptop, the Qosmio X770 3D, just launched in Europe earlier this week and was introduced at Computex 2011 as one of the first to ship with the newly released NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M graphics card. This machine is geared for 3D enthusiasts who need a powerful yet portable computer that can handle all the latest PC games.
Toshiba is pledging to exhibit not just the world’s thinnest and lightest 10-inch tablet at CES next week, but also the thinnest and lightest 13-inch laptop.
Toshiba is going to release the Qosmio X770 gaming and entertainment notebook, featuring a 17.3" display, the latest Intel processor and Nvidia graphics, and a brand new design.
Toshiba will start selling its first glasses-free 3D laptop later this month for US$1,699 to free viewers from the awkwardness of wearing 3D glasses to view multimedia content, the company said on Tuesday.
Thank you, Toshiba, for keeping up with the 3D laptops. Now with the Qosmio F750, eschewing the glasses seems like the best idea for what's under the hood. But who wants to stare at a lenticular lens sheet all day?
The Toshiba Satellite L755-S5214 will suffice for everyday tasks like word processing and surfing the Internet, and will do so without burning a hole in your pocket. But those looking for speed, power, and long battery life should look elsewhere.
At CES 2012, Toshiba showed off a convertible Windows 7 notebook called the Portégé M930 with a pretty interesting articulating hinge to switch between notebook and slate mode.
The Toshiba Satellite P745-S4320 has all the right features to suggest it's a great mainstream laptop, unless you're a no-frills user—then save yourself the $150.
Toshiba's Satellite P775 is a good example. The key points I jotted down while putting it through its paces are not the 2GHz Intel Core i7-2630WM quad-core processor - many laptops have one of those - the 750GB hard drive - ditto - or the Blu-ray Disc drive - a less commonplace component, but not one to stir the passions, either - but its backlit-keyboard and its looks.
Currently, there are two offered versions of the 1 inch thin 3.2-pound laptop, that has a blue magnesium alloy chassis. Toshiba Direct sells the Portege R835-ST3N01 with the Intel Core i3-2310M CPU, while Newegg has in stock the R835-P56 with the Core i5-2410M chip. Both laptops come with 4GB of DDR3 memory, a 640GB hard drive, built-in DVD burner, and a six-cell battery that lasts "up to 9 hours" on a single charge.
The Toshiba Portege R835-P50X is the epitome of what an ultraportable should be: Lightweight, relatively inexpensive, powerful, and equipped with enough battery life to last from dawn to dusk.
Toshiba was keeping its Portégé Z830 under glass at IFA, so while we couldn't pick it up and click away, we could at least get some snaps and make some initial observations.
Toshiba's Portégé Z830 ultrabook is among the first crop of notebooks coming to market built upon Intel's Ultrabook platform. Intel sees the ultrabook as the ideal computer that can be built using today's technologies. Netbooks showed that the public was interested in having a light, portable computer - but they were, by and large, anything but thin.
The flow of announcements of light and thin Ultrabooks is starting to strengthen after yesterday's Lenovo's IdeaPad U300s and today's introduction from Acer of its Aspire S3.
Toshiba's Portege Z830 Ultrabook, a device the company is billing as the world's lightest 13-inch laptop, is now available online at Toshiba.com for consumers to buy.
It seems like almost every notebook PC manufacturer has decided to announce an "Ultrabook" (a 13-inch thin and light multimedia laptop) this week. Toshiba America is the latest company to join the fray; Toshiba today unveiled the Portégé Z830 Series, the company's first Ultrabook using second Generation Intel Core processors. The new Z830 has a starting weight of less than 2.5 pounds and features a 0.63-inch (15.9 mm) profile ... making it about 20 percent lighter and 40 percent thinner than the previous Portégé R830 Series.
Featuring a 15.6? full HD display with double parallax image technology, the notebook is able to simultaneously project two sets of images splitted between the left and right eyes in order to create a 3D effect. Meanwhile, a built-in webcam on the top of the display panel tracks the position of viewer's face and adjusts the projection accordingly.
Toshiba has unveiled the Qosmio T851, a glasses-free 3D notebook. That's all well and nice, but what's really interesting is that this is being touted as the "world's first" laptop that can simultaneously display 2D and 3D content.
When Toshiba UK announced the launch of the Qosmio X770 3D -- a new gaming laptop with stereoscopic 3D graphics and a 17.3in HD screen, I immediately thought: could this be an Alienware killer? Toshiba has been said to lag behind other manufacturers when it comes to high-end gaming laptops, but after spending time with the X770 I would suggest that's no longer the case.
The Toshiba Qosmio X775-3DV78 is powerful gaming laptop that comes with 3D eyewear, but you're laying down a lot of money for a tacky design and less than an hour of battery life.
While the $799 Toshiba Satellite A665-S5176X is an affordably priced Blu-ray laptop with a next-gen Intel Core i3 processor, there are other options out there that offer better design or performance for the same money.
Aesthetically, the Toshiba Satellite C655 is the most generic laptop I've ever reviewed. It is made entirely out of matte black plastic, most of which has a textured design that makes the laptop particularly resistant to showing fingerprints, although fine grain dirt and lint can get caught in the many groves of the lid and palmrest.
The Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5130 laptop has all the limitations of a netbook, like weak processing power and few connectivity ports for peripherals, without the benefits of a netbook's portability and all-day battery life.
The Best Buy-exclusive Toshiba Satellite E305-S1990X is a heck of a 14-inch laptop, offering a rock-solid combination of specs and design for a reasonable price.
The new Toshiba E305 is a Best Buy exclusive laptop with a 14-inch screen and a street price around $900. Packed with an Intel Core i5 "Sandy Bridge" processor, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive and a Blu-ray drive, is this the next great family PC? Keep reading to find out.
14.0-inch 720p (1366x768) display with LED backlighting
The Toshiba Qosmio F755-3D290 laptop seems like something out of science fiction, but comes off as a decent desktop replacement saddled with an expensive, gimmicky 3D display.
Toshiba Europe has updated the Satellite L series multimedia laptop lineup, adding the Satellite L730 / L735 13.3-inch models, L750 / L750D / L755 / L755D 15.6-inchers, and the 17.3? Satellite L770 / L775.
Though not particularly inspiring, the basic 15-inch Toshiba Satellite L655 has a current-gen CPU and can be found for around $600, making it a worthwhile budget choice.
The updated version -- model L735D-S3300 -- includes the AMD E-series E300 dual-core processor instead of an Intel Celeron in the L635, as well as memory and hard drive specs bump, from 2GB and 250GB to 3GB and 320GB, respectively. Since it's based on the standard L735, the Kids version has the same features, such as a DVD burner, a 1366×768 screen, webcam, Wi-Fi, and a media card reader.
What the Toshiba Satellite L745-S4210 budget laptop lacks in flare it makes up for with an up-to-date processor, great battery life, and affordable pricing.
Budget shoppers had best look elsewhere than the 14-inch Toshiba Satellite L745D-S4220. A low-end processor and middling speed aren't worth the $499 asking price, and we've seen many laptops in the same range that offer more.
The Satellite L755 is a 15.6-inch budget notebook with a good keyboard and satisfactory overall performance. With the holidays fast approaching, is it worth recommending this laptop at nearly $700?
With a new Sandy Bridge processor and a lot of memory, the Toshiba Satellite M645-S4116 excels for work in standard productivity applications--but its graphics prowess and battery life leave something to be desired.
The Toshiba Satellite M645-S4118x serves up the latest second-generation Intel Core i5-2410M processor, and features like Blu-ray, Harman/Kardon speakers, and speedy USB 3.0 and Bluetooth connections.
The AMD E-450 is a refresh of the E-350 Fusion Accelerated Processing Unit, both aimed at cheap full-size notebooks, netbooks, and small form factor desktop computers.
The 6990M has 1120 stream processors, 715MHz engine clock speed, a 256-bit memory interface and 2GB of GDDR5 video memory running at 900MHz, all together providing 1.6 TFLOPs of compute power.
MSI has showcased at the 2012 CES Show the GUS II, an external graphics card enclosure prototype, which adds dedicated desktop-class GPU power to laptops with a Thunderbolt port.
