A multiferroic material with potential uses for cheap and quick data storage
Researchers at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin (HZB) in close collaboration with colleagues in France and UK, have engineered a material that exhibits a rare and versatile trait in magnetism at room temperature. It's called a "multiferroic," and it means that the material has properties allowing it to be both electrically charged (ferroelectric) and also the ability to be magnetic (ferromagnetic), with its magnetisation controlled by electricity.

Corsair Performance Pro 256GB SSD Review
The SSD market is flooded with SandForce based drives, and in just a year’s time one would be hard pressed to review an SSD that didn't feature a SandForce controller. A quick switch for magnetic needles
Microscopically tiny ferromagnetic platelets exhibit a phenomenon which could be exploited in the future for particularly stable magnetic data storage: so-called magnetic vortex cores. These are needle-shaped magnetic structures measuring 20 nanometres in diameter. Five years ago, researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (formerly the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research) in Stuttgart found a way to reverse the magnetic field needles despite their stability using only a tiny amount of energy so that their tips pointed in the opposite direction. Such a switching process is necessary to enable the vortex cores to be used in data processing.

One of the barriers to using SSDs in RAID setups, other than the high price of the drives themselves, has been the lack of TRIM support when running in that mode. TRIM is a command that allows an OS like Windows 7 to inform an SSD which blocks of data can be wiped and marked for re-use.

Supercomputers aren’t what they used to be. The Chinese are building a supercomputer with their own microprocessors, shunning American chip giants Intel and AMD. The Spanish are building one with cellphone chips. And this week, the San Diego Supercomputer Center officially plugged in the first supercomputer that uses flash storage rather than good old-fashioned spinning disks.

Newly discovered magnetic phenomenon could accelerate data storage by several orders of magnitude
In magnetic memory, data is encoded by reversing the magnetization of tiny points. Such memory works using the so-called magnetic moments of atoms, which can be in either "parallel" or "antiparallel" alignment in the storage medium to represent to "0" and "1".

Packing in six times more storage density with the help of table salt
It's like packing your clothes in your suitcase when you travel. The neater you pack them the more you can carry. In the same way, the team of scientists has used nanopatterning to closely pack more of the miniature structures that hold information in the form of bits, per unit area.

Seagate and Western Digital Cast Long Shadow Over Toshiba in Battle for HDD Supremacy
Over the past several years, hard drive manufacturers have become an increasingly rare breed. Venerable brands like Quantum and Maxtor disappeared, Fujitsu sold out to Toshiba, and more recently Hitachi and Samsung were snapped up -- by Western Digital and Seagate, respectively. That means the Royal Rumble for HDD supremacy is now down to its final three combatants as others gravitate toward more modern solid-state counterparts.

Seven SSD sizzlers
While there's no escaping the fact that solid-state drives are still expensive, they are steadily getting cheaper and the capacities are increasing. For the average PC user to be convinced that it is a must-have upgrade, the performance benefits would really need to be experienced.

Spintronics: Hitting the wall
The storage of data on magnetic media like hard disk drives is accomplished by orienting minute magnetic domains using magnetic fields. Although a mature technology, this approach requires relatively bulky components and complex control schemes. An alternative is to use an electrical method, where a spin-polarized electrical current is applied to rearrange magnetic domains directly using what is known as the 'spin torque' effect. However, some aspects of this approach remain unconfirmed, such as whether there is any intrinsic resistance to the manipulation of magnetic domain walls, even in a perfect nanowire.

SSD shootout: Samsung 470 vs. Corsair Nova vs. OCZ Vertex 2
Today we are going to have a look at some of the fastest SSDs available to notebook users. The Samsung 470 is Samsung's latest SSD. It uses 30nm flash and a new Samsung controller. Second in our lineup is the Corsair Nova V128GB. It uses an Indilinx Barefoot controller. Lastly we included the OCZ Vertex 2, which is a very popular SSD at the moment. It uses the Sandforce 1200 controller. Let's find out which SSD is the fastest.

The Great SSD Migration, Part1: Migrating a Windows 7 Desktop to SSD
As I noted in my recent article Install Windows 7 With A USB Memory Key, my home office environment is undergoing a big change of sorts this year. I'll be building the new network around Windows Home Server 2011, once that ships, and in the meantime, I'm upgrading many existing PCs from hard drive-based storage to SSD (solid state drive) storage. I'd like to discuss the beginnings of that effort now.

The wait for Thunderbolt-ready peripherals is over. Four months after the debut of Thunderbolt in Apple's revamped MacBook Pro lineup, storage devices that support Intel's new interconnect technology have finally arrived. To SSD or not to SSD?
I frequently find myself building -- or at least plotting out -- computers at various pricing levels. Sooner or later, two questions always arise: At what price should you institute a solid-state drive (SSD)? And when you do, what should its capacity be? Especially given the recent flooding in Thailand that’s driving the world toward a hard drive shortage and driving prices up on existing drives, it seems like an ideal time to revisit both questions.

Victorinox to launch 1TB USB / eSATA II flash drive with built-in LCD at CES
Well it looks like everyone's favorite pocketknife company is readying a 1TB combo USB 2.0/eSATA II flash drive for a CES launch next week -- yes, one TERABYTE. From the looks of it, the Victorinox drive will come in black and red finishes with two bodies -- one with a scissor and knife, and a TSA-friendly version without. Besides the optional implements, both drives appear to be virtually identical, with a key ring and plastic clasp to keep the drive safely covered when not in use.

OCZ releases RevoDrive Hybrid: 100GB SSD, 1TB hard drive, $499

OCZ RevoDrive 3 x2 480GB PCIe SSD Review - Seriously Fast Storage
Back in June of last year, OCZ released the RevoDrive, followed up rather quickly by the RevoDrive x2. Both models represented a new way of economically bundling multiple SSD controllers behind an integrated RAID solution. This broke the mold for storage, as the vast majority of end users were stuck with the common 2.5" form factor SATA SSD (as well as trying to figure out where to put one inside their desktop case full of 3.5" drive bays). Since all desktops had PCIe slots, the Revo concept just seemed to make sense.

Samsung reaches 1TB per disk platter, hints 4TB drives
Samsung has found a way to build 1TB platters for hard drives, which will allow it to build 4TB hard drives for computers. The news came from CeBIT courtesy of German newspaper Heise and indicates a new record. Currently, companies can only produce 3TB 3.5-inch hard drives, with each platter at 750MB. The breakthrough also applies to notebooks, as Samsung showed off a 2.5-inch, two-platter, 1TB drive that is compatible with most average notebooks thanks to its standard height.

Seagate New Barracuda XT 3TB Review
Storage space is something we all need to store the digital content of our lives. Whether it is family portraits, videos from the family vacation, forms, music, the latest movies downloaded straight from sources unknown(Not that we would do that mind you), or spreadsheets that track our monthly expenditures, the need for more storage space continues to rise as we keep more and more of our lives stored digitally. Higher definition digital video recorders and cameras plus high definition video content keep driving the need for storage space up with larger and larger file sizes. Not to mention the fact that most of us are digital hoarders, we keep everything it seems. Hard drive manufacturers seem more than willing to oblige our lust for more and more space. Seagate delivered their largest single drive to date the Barracuda XT ST33000651AS 3 Terabyte drive back in June.
