The technique is called "light field capture" which records various aspects of a light ray such as color, intensity, and direction. Regular cameras, Lytro says, merely record all the light rays without discerning the subtleties. June 23, 2011

Canon 5D Mark III full-frame DSLR: 22 megapixels, automatic HDR, costs $3,500 It's feature-and-price creep, but who's complaining: The Canon 5D Mark III digital SLR comes with a 22.3 megapixel sensor, 6 frames per second shooting, and a raft of gotta-have secondary features such as automatic HDR imaging and in-camera picture rating. The full-frame body is $3,500, up $500 list over the Canon 5D Mark II (both with no lens), about $1,000 above the current street price. Some much-improved accessories are jaw-droppers: a radio-control Speedlite 600EX-RT for $630 and a wired/wireless WFT-E7A file transmitter for $850. March 02, 2012

Canon announces ELPH 510 HS / IXUS 1100 HS compact superzoom Canon has unveiled the ELPH 510 HS (IXUS 1100 HS) - a super-slim compact superzoom in the ELPH/IXUS family. Despite its small size, it manages to fit a 28-336mm equivalent, image stabilized lens in front of its 12.1MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor. It also has a 460k dot 3.2" (8.8cm) touchscreen LCD on its reverse. Unlike most previous Canon ELPHs, it includes the ability to shoot in 16:9, 3:2 and 1:1 image ratios. Beyond that there are the usual Digic 4-powered creative effects such as Miniature and Toy Camera, the ability to shoot high-speed bursts, slow-motion movies and 1080p24 HD capture. The 510 HS is also compatible with a new optional external flash. August 23, 2011

Canon announces Japan-only IXY 32S touch-shutter variant Canon Japan has announced the IXY 32S, a variant of the IXY 31S (IXUS 310 HS/ELPH 500 HS) with touch-shutter control. As with the existing model, it features a 12.1MP back-lit CMOS sensor, 24-105mm equivalent, F2.0-5.8 lens and 3.2" 16:9 touch screen. It's not clear whether there are any hardware differences, preventing touch-shutter being added to existing models by firmware update. Canon's touch-shutter implementation is unusual in that it doesn't fire the shutter until the user's finger is removed - meaning the camera can be pre-focused to avoid focus lag, but at the risk of being focused in the wrong position for a moving subject. For now, it appears to be a Japan-only model. July 14, 2011
Canon announces new S100 and SX40 point-and-shoot cameras Canon announced two new cameras on Thursday as part of its PowerShot line of point-and-shoot cameras. Canon introduces ELPH 310 HS/IXUS 230 HS compact camera Canon has launched the ELPH 310 HS (IXUS 230 HS in Europe), a surprisingly long zoom style compact. The squeezes an 8x zoom into the sort of tiny, colorful body we expect of the ELPH/IXUS series. The extra zoom (out to an impressive 224mm equiv), comes at the expense of the wide-angle capability, with the 230 HS's lens starting at a still fairly handy 28mm equiv, rather than the 24mm equivalent featured on recent comparable models. The lens also features the company's latest 'Intelligent' image stabilization. Beyond that there's a 12.1 back-illuminated CMOS sensor and 3.0" 460k dot LCD. It can also shoot 1080p24 HD video. August 23, 2011
Canon launches PowerShot SX40 HS 35x CMOS superzoom Canon has launched the PowerShot SX40 HS - a 12MP CMOS-based superzoom with 35x zoom. The SX40 steps into the place of the SX30 and offers a 24-840mm equivalent zoom range. It can shoot at up to 10.3 frames per second for 8 shots and can capture 1080p24 HD video. An 'Intelligent IS' system attempts to assess the shooting conditions and use the most appropriate stabilization mode, to make the camera's huge lens range usable. September 15, 2011
Canon launches PowerShot SX150 IS superzoom Canon has updated its budget SX compact superzoom with the launch of the PowerShot SX150 IS. The SX150 IS adds a 14.1MP CCD in the place of the SX130's 12MP chip. Beyond that the specs are familiar - a 12x 28-336mm equivalent image stabilized lens, 720p30 HD video recording and a comparatively low-resolution 230k dot 3.0" LCD screen. Canon brings its latest 'Intelligent' image stabilization technology to bear on the SX150, with the camera automatically selecting from seven different modes, based on its understanding of the type of shooting being conducted. Canon PowerShot G1 X: Champion of the point and shoots The first thing you notice when picking up the new Canon G1 X is that it's big for a point and shoot. Larger than Canon's previous point and shoot flagship, the G12, it clearly isn't designed for a pants or shirt pocket. The second thing you notice is how fast it is. Snapping off frames with it feels like shooting with an entry-level DSLR -- except that its sizeable 1.5-inch, almost-APS-C-sized, 14MP sensor and 28mm-112mm (in 35mm equivalent focal lengths) lens are all contained in one "point and shoot" unit. January 11, 2012
Canon PowerShot G1 X: New King of Fixed-Lens Cameras? It was going to be hard for any camera, G-series successor or otherwise, to top the Canon PowerShot G12. However, Canon may have just shot the moon with the new PowerShot G1 X. January 9, 2012
Canon Powershot S100 Preview When Canon revived its Powershot S range with the S90 in August 2009, it was in acknowledgement of a clear demand from enthusiast photographers for high quality yet pocketable cameras offering extensive manual control. The S95, which followed almost exactly a year later, stuck with much the same formula - a relatively large sensor, a 28-105mm equivalent zoom lens with a fast F2 maximum aperture at wideangle, and a multi-functional control dial around the lens. But while its successor, the S100, looks much the same again on the outside, it is to all intents and purposes a brand new camera. September 15, 2011
Canon releases EOS-1D C camera for movie and TV production Canon on Monday debuted the EOS-1D C at the 2012 NAB Show in Las Vegas. The EOS-1D C is a digital SLR with a video focus that supports in-camera 4K (4096-by-2160 pixel resolution) video recording with 4:2:2 color sampling. April 17, 2012
Canon S100: The New Pocket Powerhouse Point-and-Shoot Canon's S95 was our favorite pocket camera. Um, it's probably not anymore. Meet the S100. What's new? Oh, Canon's first Digic V processor. Canon strikes back: EOS-1D X focuses on quality and speed, costs $6,800 Could this be the world's best, most technogically advanced camera ever? Canon thinks so in announcing the Canon EOS-1D X digital SLR (DSLR) with ultra-accurate focusing, a new CMOS sensor capable of working without flash in most every situation, and highest-quality images. The technology Canon brings to bear on the 1D X effectively responds to the concerns of high-end photographers who defected to Nikon in the past decade. It will have 18 megapixels of resolution and cost $6,800 when it ships next March -- and that's without lenses. October 18, 2011

The X-S1 is an addition to the company's X-series and is built around the same 2/3" EXR CMOS sensor as the recently announced X10. Meanwhile, company president and CEO Shigetaka Komori said it will create a mirrorless, interchangeable lens camera built around a larger sensor with 'resolution and low noise [that] will surpass the 35mm full size sensor.' We're not taking this to mean it will be a full-frame camera. The X-S1 features a 26x, 24-624mm equivalent F2.8-5.3 zoom and will be available from early 2012. October 05, 2011

How digital technology is reinventing cinema As of 2012, around 60% of all cinema screens worldwide have been converted from film to digital projectors. Over half of those digital screens are outfitted with stereoscopic (3D) projectors. By 2015, it is expected that almost every cinema screen will be digital and that film projection will all but die out. May 8, 2012
How the Lytro No-Focus Light Field Camera Changes Photography Building upon years of research by Stanford University, and with a PhD thesis and five further years of research in hand, Ren Ng has finally launched the infinite-focus, light field photography company Lytro. Fundamentally, a Lytro camera -- a light field camera -- does away with the single most important and limiting factor of conventional photography: the lens. Instead of focusing, distorting, and cajoling light onto a 2D digital or film plane, light field cameras capture everything that it sees. With conventional lenses, a specific focal point must be chosen -- with Lytro, you simply capture every last grain of light data, and then use software to define a focal point. June 24, 2011

Master the hidden power of your camera's program mode I occasionally teach digital photography workshops, and one of the first questions I ask my students is what exposure mode they use. Often, I'll hear, "I usually set it on auto and leave it there." But when I look at their camera, I find it's set on Program mode, not Auto. Those two settings (usually indicated by an A for Auto and a P for Program) sound similar, but they do different things. This week we take a look at your camera's Program mode, and how you can use it to take better photos. July 21, 2011

Nikon's Curious Crusade Against Physical User Manuals Okay Nikon, so you don't include a dead tree usuer manual with new cameras anymore. That's fine; they just sit at the bottom of a drawer until we eventually throw them out. But to also DRM against printing it out? What the hell. August 22, 2011
Nikon's First Mirrorless Cameras Can Use Regular DSLR Lenses Despite Tinyness Our friends over at PopPhoto got a look at the new Nikon J1 and V1, Nikon's first forays into mirrorless cameras. The big benefit of mirrorless cameras is a huge reduction in size from DSLRs--almost as small as point-and-shoots--with, theoretically, not a huge drop-down in image quality (we loved, for example, Sony's NEX-5, a similar idea). Olympus OM-D E-M5: Mirrorless camera built to compete with DSLRs Olympus took the wraps off its latest Micro Four-Thirds camera today--its eighth compact interchangeable-lens camera overall, but the first model not to be part of the company's Pen series. Olympus Pen E-P3 camera gets a performance boost Olympus has been on the fast track with its Pen mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras since June 2009, when the E-P1 was introduced. Now in its third generation, the 12 megapixel E-P3 easily slides into the flagship position of the Olympus Micro Four Thirds line, which includes the E-PL3 and the E-PM1. There were only subtle differences between the first two models--the E-P1 and the E-P2--but the E-P3 ($900 with 14-42mm lens) marks a more pronounced step forward. February 9, 2012

Panasonic announces four new point-and-shoot cameras Panasonic's latest camera models are extreme in a couple of ways: extreme in terms of optical-zoom range, and extreme in the "chugging a carafe of Mountain Dew while pogo-sticking down Mount Everest" sense. On Tuesday, the company announced four new Lumix point-and-shoots that will be available in the first quarter of the year, headlined by the 20X-optical-zoom Lumix ZS20 and the rugged but robust Lumix TS4. February 1, 2012
Panasonic creates HDC-Z10000 AVCHD 2.0 compatible 3D HD camcorder Panasonic has announced the HDC-Z10000 an integrated twin-lens 2D/3D camcorder that can shoot in the AVCHD 3D/Progressive standard. The camera features a parallax-barrier LCD that allows the 3D footage to be reviewed on-camera without the need for special glasses. Its adoption of the latest AVCHD standard allows it to shoot 1080p60 footage in 2D and up to 1080i60 in 3D, as well as offering 30p and 24p options. The camera essentially combines two of the company's 3MOS camcorders in a single body, offering 30-369 equivalent F1.5-2.8 zooms (32-320mm in 3D mode), stabilized for both 2D and 3D shooting. August 31, 2011
Panasonic DMC-GH2 Review When Panasonic first launched the GH1, its second Micro Four Thirds camera, it was widely seen as simply being a G1 with video shooting and a considerably more expensive kit lens. And, if your primary concern was stills photography then this wasn't an entirely unreasonable assessment. However, its real appeal was not that it had video, but that it offered what was, at the time, some of the most flexible, high quality video available. Again, the 14-140mm F4.0-5.8 kit zoom may not have been cheap but it had been specifically designed and built with fast, quiet autofocus and stepless aperture control to allow AF during movie shooting and exposure changes without sudden changes in brightness. March 23, 2011
Panasonic DMX-FZ150 preview stills and HD videos samples We've been using a Panasonic DMC-FZ150 superzoom for a couple of days and have put together a previews samples gallery from the camera. We've selected a 39-image samples gallery shot in a variety of situations and at variety of ISO settings, to give a taste of how this latest 12MP MOS sensor performs. We've also uploaded two videos shot in the camera's 1080p60 Full HD mode. As always, as well as being able to view the images and videos, you can download the full-size originals. August 26, 2011
Panasonic GF3 Micro Four Third Camera Slimmed Down Even Further With its slim and trim size, the all new LUMIX GF3 from Panasonic is sure to win converts to the Micro Four Thirds standard. After all, the GF3 - weighing in at only 7.83 ounces - is literally smaller than many phones on the market. While compact, the LUMIX GF3 does not sacrifice quality like a point and shoot camera does. This is still a high quality, DSLR competitor. This camera boasts such abilities as a 12.1-megapixel DSLR class sensor, 1080/60i video taking abilities as well as being able to take 3D images (lens sold separately). June 16, 2011
Panasonic gives details of power zoom-enabling firmware v1.1 for GH2, G3, GF3 and GF2 Panasonic has provided details of a firmware update for its recent G-system cameras to provide full compatibility with the newly-announced Lumix X power zoom lenses. The firmware, which will be available at 'the beginning of October' will work with the DMC-GH2, G3, GF3 and GF2, and will provide several additional options for how the powered zoom is controlled. By a process of elimination, it seems reasonable to assume these are the functions that won't be available to older G-series users (G1, GF1, GH1, G2, G10), and possibly Olympus PEN users. August 29, 2011
Panasonic Lumix DMC-3D1 dual-lens 3D shooter to sell for $500 Previewed at the IFA 2011 show in Germany in September, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-3D1 is a new 3D-capable compact point-and-shoot camera available just in time for the holidays. November 7, 2011
Panasonic LUMIX DMC-3D1 Puts Dual Lenses to Work for More Than 3D The dust seems to have settled a bit on the explosion of the 3D onto the media marketplace. Their are some fanatic supporters but the rest of the market seems a little nonplussed. Panasonic is ready at the bat with their latest subcompact the LUMIX DMC-3D1 camera. While it does shoot the "love it or hate it" 3D photographs, it does so with much more style than most and a few eye popping extras. The 2x 20 - 100 mm lenses both expose their own 12 megapixel MOS sensor. They also claim amazing low-light sensitivity and have the track record to support it. With increase low-light abilities comes high shutter speed prowess at up to 8fps continuous shooting until internal buffers fill. It should even be able to manage some continuous shooting in 3D mode as well. November 8, 2011
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ150 The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ150 offers a long 24x zoom range, 1080p video recording, and fast continuous shooting. It's priced a little high when you compare it with competitors, but it's still a very capable camera. November 9, 2011
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3 The touch-screen Lumix DMC-GF3 is Panasonic's smalllest Micro Four Thirds camera. Its low-light performance and sharpness aren't on the same level as some competitors, but it is still a very capable camera. December 2, 2011
Panasonic Lumix GX1 Review The Panasonic GF1 helped convince a lot of photographers that a compact shooter could feel delightfully professional. The Lumix DMC-GX1 is Panasonic's most evolved Micro Four Thirds camera yet, and it delivers huge on that promise--but is it enough? January 26, 2012
Panasonic Lumix ZS20: The Slimmest 20x Zoom Camera Yet The Panasonic Lumix ZS20 crams a 20x Leica zoom lens into a camera that measures just 1.11 inches thick. Panasonic announces upcoming firmware update for DMC-GH2 Panasonic has announced a firmware update for its Lumix DMC-GH2 video-orientated interchangeable lens camera that will offer a range of improvements and new features. Extended compatibility with the company's latest 'X' series powerzoom lenses is also included, as is the ability to turn all touchscreen features completely off. An update to the PHOTOfunSTUDIO 6.0 software will also be available to handle the GH2's new video mode. Both updates will be available at the beginning of December. November 7, 2011

Pentax Q takes mini system camera crown Not long after Sony announced the NEX-C3, Panasonic revealed its Lumix DMC-GF3, as the two tech giants slugged it out to take the title for world's smallest interchangeable lens camera. June 24, 2011
Pentax Q: Smallest compact interchangeable lens camera sports biggest price tag Last week, Pentax jumped into the compact interchangeable lens camera fray with the announcement of the Pentax Q. Roughly the size of a Canon PowerShot S95 (without a retractable lens) and not much heavier, it's currently the smallest mirrorless interchangeable lens camera on the market, though it sports the biggest price tag at $800 (with a 47mm equivalent f/1.9 standard prime kit lens). It seems you'll be paying the premium for the diminutive size and retro-cool styling, rather than top-notch image quality, though. June 28, 2011

Researchers Hack a DSLR Into a Hyperspectral Imager Think consumer camera equipment is expensive? At least you are not a scientist who needs a specialized "hyperspectral" camera to see parts of the electromagnetic spectrum beyond what the human eye can see. This sort of equipment is used to identify chemical compounds and check for mining deposits, but it does not come cheap. December 19, 2011

Samsung NX200 Lightning Review: It Has More Megapixels, But... The NX200 could almost be a DSLR camera, with its giant image sensor and fat lenses. And it's priced like one $900. Samsung SH100 point-and-shoot At first glance, the Samsung SH100 ($200) looks like a run-of-the-mill, low-priced touchscreen camera. It's built for very casual shooters, and its core specs aren't exactly mind-boggling: The SH100's 14-megapixel CCD sensor may have been an impressive feature a few years ago, but in these days of ever-inflated pixel counts, it's standard issue in the compact camera world. Same goes for its 5X optical zoom lens and 720p video recording at 30 frames per second. July 19, 2011

Canon EOS 600D 18Mp DSLR Those looking for a new DSLR haven't had a decision this tricky in years. In one corner, Nikon's D5100 and in the other, Canon's EOS 600D. Both offer similar specifications, and neither is exactly lacking when it comes to both image quality and platform support. July 29, 2011
Canon EOS Rebel T3 Canon's entry-level EOS Rebel T3 is a step up from Canon's popular XS DSLR, adding a bump up to a 12 megapixel sensor, a DIGIC 4 processor, longer battery life, higher ISO capabilities, improved autofocus and metering systems and the now ubiquitous video capture--a feature missing from the older XS. Its core functionality is very similar to its predecessor although the updated $600 (MSRP) model is even more user-friendly. October 24, 2011
Canon G1 X Hands On: The Sawed-Off Shotgun of Point-and-Shoots Canon's G1 X is kind of a ridiculous camera. It's a point-and-shoot. But it has a bigger image sensor than most of the mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras out there. And it's $800, so it costs more too. January 10, 2012

Canon PowerShot A800 (Black) Canon's 2010 A-series entry-level point-and-shoots didn't show a lot of diversity. That changed for 2011, though, as each model has noticeable feature differences beyond megapixels and scene modes. The lowest-end model, the A800, has the honor of being Canon's first camera to have a starting price under $100. October 26, 2011

Canon Powershot A3300 IS Digital Camera The Canon PowerShot A3300 IS is a solid sub-$200 point-and-shoot camera in more ways than one: It has a sturdy build, and it takes good-looking pictures for a camera at such a low price ($180). As with many lower-priced cameras, you don't get the manual controls, long-zoom lens, or kitchen-sink extras you'd find in higher-end models, but you still get an impressive array of shooting modes, an optically stabilized wide-angle zoom lens, and good performance for a $180 camera. Canon PowerShot Elph 310 HS Canon's compact PowerShot Elph 310 HS packs an 8x zoom lens into a body that can slide into your shirt pocket with ease. Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS If the idea of an almost-all-touchscreen camera appeals to you, the Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS ($300) is one of the best point-and-shoot options in that class. But it's becoming clear that touchscreen-operated cameras are a significantly different beast than traditional cameras with similar specs. Because of its touchscreen, this camera acts more like a phone than a more-traditional camera, and that brings its fair share of pros and cons. July 14, 2011
Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS (Pink) The touch-screen controls keep the Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS from being a lower-cost PowerShot S95 alternative for enthusiasts, but its otherwise a very good ultracompact. June 23, 2011
Canon PowerShot Elph 510 HS The Canon PowerShot Elph 510 HS is a very good choice if you want a lot of zoom from a small camera body, and you prefer a touch screen to physical controls. But poor low-light performance and a slow start-up time hold this compact superzoom back. October 26, 2011
Canon PowerShot Elph 520 HS In a way, it represents a new breed of basic compact camera: Rather than cramming more megapixels into a tiny sensor, the 10-megapixel PowerShot Elph 520 HS keeps the pixel count relatively sane and jacks up the optical zoom to 12x (28mm to 336mm), an impossible-sounding level for a camera of this size. Canon PowerShot S100 The third and latest version of Canon's popular pocket-size S-series camera, the PowerShot S100, continues its predecessors' legacy by offering a compact body and manual controls. Canon Rebel T3i / EOS 600D Review Ever since Canon introduced its original 'Digital Rebel' back in August 2003 - famously the first 'affordable' digital SLR - the company has continually developed and refined its entry-level line with ever-more-frequent releases, adding in more and more features in the process. So true to form, almost precisely a year to the day after the advent of the EOS Rebel T2i / 550D Canon launched its next model, predictably named the EOS Rebel T3i / 600D. As usual the 550D remains in Canon's range at a lower price point, with the EOS 1100D slotting in beneath it to round off the company's offerings to entry-level SLR users. March 31, 2011
Casio Exilim EX-ZR100 A member of the relatively new breed of pocket megazoom cameras, the 12-megapixel, 12.5X-optical-zoom Casio Exilim EX-ZR100 offers manual controls for advanced users who want to stretch their photographic skills. But it's also for novices, thanks to extensive automatic shooting options that make capturing snapshots easy. September 9, 2011
Contour+ The Contour+ sports camera is simple to use, with pro-level flexibility and quality; however, Contour's lower-priced options may be more appropriate for casual users. June 29, 2011

First Nikon D4 Test Shots and Video: Low Light, High Quality We've heard ridiculous things about the Nikon D4's low-light performance: In short, word was that you can basically take great photos in a cave. We didn't go spelunking, but we did put this $6000 monster through its low light paces, and the results were even better than we'd hoped. February 29, 2012
Fujifilm FinePix F550EXR pocket megazoom camera has standout GPS features The 16-megapixel, 15X-optical-zoom Fujifilm FinePix F550 EXR is the latest model in Fujifilm's higher-end F series, and it's appropriately packed with features. In addition to manual, semimanual, and automatic shooting modes, the F550 is one of the latest crew of cameras with GPS capabilities and a long-zoom lens. The F550 fits neatly into the pocket megazoom category of cameras, offering some far-reaching in-camera goodies that will interest snapshooters, photo enthusiasts, and vacationers alike. Hands on with the Nikon 1 J1 With the announcement of the Nikon 1 series of compact interchangeable-lens cameras, Nikon became the first of the "big two" DSLR makers (the other being Canon) to introduce a mirrorless-system model. Rumors and a countdown clock amped up the excitement surrounding Nikon's camera announcement, which finally happened in New York earlier this week. September 23, 2011
Hands on with the Nikon D3200 DSLR The great and the good were out in force at Nikon's London press launch this week of its latest entry-level DSLR, the D3200. Boasting a new 24.2Mp DX format CMOS sensor, the camera also bags an Expeed 3 processor -- the same imaging engine featured on the Nikon D4, the company's flagship shooter. April 19, 2012

JVC GC-PX10 The JVC GC-PX10 is marketed as a hybrid camera that is equally adept at video and still-image capture, but its ergonomics are better suited for recording video than they are for shooting standard photos. December 2, 2011
JVC GC-PX10 Camera / Camcorder Hybrid Having an Identity Crisis For many prosumers, the idea of having to carry both a video camera and a still image camera is not an appealing thought. Twice the amount of storage, twice the batteries and all the other miscellaneous items can add up quick. For this reason, JVC's latest GC-PX10 hybrid camera perhaps is something that can kill two birds with one stone. October 13, 2011

Kodak EasyShare Touch M5370 The Kodak Easyshare Touch M5370 is able to capture good images in decent light, but its touch-screen interface is poorly conceived and implemented, which makes using the camera a bit of a chore in any mode other than Auto. November 18, 2011

Nikon Coolpix AW100 The Nikon Coolpix AW100 is a rugged point-and-shoot camera that, while a bit on the pricey side, captures sharp images and can take quite a beating without a hiccup. December 20, 2011
Nikon Coolpix L810 A cheap camera with a wide, long lens and AA batteries, the Nikon Coolpix L810 has little else going for it. May 11, 2012
Nikon Coolpix P300 point-and-shoot camera With just a few trade-offs, the Nikon Coolpix P300 ($330) is as close as a rival gets to the Canon PowerShot S95 in the realm of compact cameras with manual controls. Both cameras distinguish themselves from the pack by targeting discerning photographers looking for a pocketable complement to a DSLR--one that doesn't sacrifice much in terms of performance or features. August 15, 2011
Nikon Coolpix P7100 The Nikon Coolpix P7100 is big on image quality and manual controls, although it comes at the cost of size and weight. The camera will appeal to you if you are an enthusiast who doesn't always want to lug a D-SLR around, but is a tough sell if you're looking for a compact and sleek point-and-shoot. December 7, 2011
Nikon D800 vs. Canon 5D Mark III: Which Shoots Better Video? Canon and Nikon both have brand new professional DLSR cameras fighting for the wallets of photographers and videographers the world over. We recently reviewed the Canon 5D Mark III, and are whipping up a review of the Nikon D800. In the meantime, we put together a comparison of the video capabilities of these two foes. March 28, 2012

Olympus PEN E-P3 The Olympus PEN E-P3 Micro Four Thirds camera offers a pleasing mix of a smaller-than-SLR body, fast performance, and beautiful images, but for the best pictures possible you still need a true D-SLR. July 5, 2011
Olympus PEN E-P3 in-depth review The Olympus PEN E-P3 looks a lot like its forebears - not just the E-P1 and E-P2 but, just as significantly, the company's film era Pen F camera. Significantly because, in an age in which the major electronics giants are building their photographic presence, Olympus is one of only a handful of companies with genuine heritage to turn to. And, despite modern cameras making high image quality more accessible than ever, there is an undeniable reverence for the look and feel of 1960s cameras. August 17, 2011

Panasonic Debuts Megazoom Camera Panasonic is the latest big company to announce new camera offerings for the fall, as it unveiled two new fixed-lens cameras, a firmware update to last year's excellent Lumix LX5, and two new lenses for its G series of compact interchangeable-lens cameras. August 26, 2011
Panasonic DMC-FH7 Review Similar in most respects to its predecessor the FH5, the FH7 features a new touch-sensitive LCD screen, which enables Touch AF - a feature which has trickled down from higher-end Lumix cameras which allows you to focus and release the shutter by simply touching the display. September 7, 2011
Panasonic DMC-G3 In-depth Review The G3 heralds the start of Panasonic's third generation of mirrorless cameras. In some respects it's a refinement of previous models; its electronic viewfinder and hinged rear display screen are identical to the G1 and G2, for example. However, behind the aluminium front panel of its slimmed-down, externally-simplified body lies a completely new 16.7MP sensor. This makes it the first mass-market Micro Four Thirds model to move beyond Panasonic's 12MP chip. July 11, 2011
Panasonic DMC-GF3 Review With the arrival of the GF3, Panasonic further solidifies the distinctions between its existing G-series lineup. The enthusiast-targeted rangefinder aesthetic heralded by the introduction of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 appears for the moment to have given way to a new directive; producing the smallest, lightest G-series camera possible. The move towards smaller, lighter large-sensor cameras with fewer external controls is not limited to Panasonic of course, as both Olympus and Sony are also courting the mass market aggressively. August 11, 2011
Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3 advanced camera sports updated and streamlined features Panasonic has made some interesting changes to its third generation Micro Four Thirds, interchangeable lens camera, the Lumix DMC-G3. Updates include a new 16 megapixel sensor, an updated processor, and higher autofocus speed. The G3 retains a touchscreen, articulated LCD and features a slimmer DSLR-like design with a built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF), pop-up flash, and hotshoe. At launch, the camera was about $100 less than the G2's original price February 21, 2012
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2 camera More than any device in recent memory, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2 is a showpiece for the benefits and drawbacks of a touchscreen interface. Although the camera's touchscreen UI introduces a few groundbreaking features to the compact interchangeable-lens camera category, it may leave you longing for old-fashioned analog controls more often than not. July 15, 2011
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3 (with 14mm lens, Black) The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3 offers the type of performance and photo quality in a relatively small design many point-and-shoot graduates will like. July 29, 2011
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ150 (Black) Hobbyists and enthusiasts who want a megazoom camera with a lot of control over final results should strongly consider the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ150. October 20, 2011
Panasonic Lumix DMC-G3 (black, body only) If you're looking for a camera that's not quite as big as a dSLR but doesn't skimp on hardware controls or features like an articulated LCD, EVF and stereo full HD video, the G3 is one of my top options. But performance is hit-and-miss for shooting action, so you may end up having to go with something just a bit bigger, anyway. July 5, 2011
Pentax K-r Pentax has long made very good digital SLRs that offer excellent image quality with simple, intuitive interfaces. And while their latest cameras pack a thorough selection of high-end features, they also have something that a lot of other SLR vendors don't: style. For example, consider the Pentax K-r, a midrange 12.4-megapixel SLR priced at $850 with an 18-55mm lens, or $800 for body only. April 1, 2011

Samsung MV800 The Samsung MV800 compact camera has a fun flip-out screen that makes it easy to take self portraits, but it falls short in terms of image quality and low-light performance. December 19, 2011
Samsung NX100 The Samsung NX100 is an innovative camera, but not always a practical one. The compact interchangeable lens camera has a handsome and slim body, but you should hang on to it carefully because it doesn't include a textured grip. Inside is a large APS-C image sensor that captures 14.6-megapixels of resolution. This means that you get the same sized sensor as in many standard DSLRs, but in a smaller overall package. Samsung designed a clever iFunction control system that lets you adjust some of the most common camera settings from controls on the lens itself. Yet, neither the 20-50mm kit zoom, nor the body, includes image stabilization. There's a smart system for automatic exposure selection, but no built-in flash. March 30, 2011
Samsung NX200 Hands-on Preview The Samsung NX200 is the company's fifth NX camera but only the third body design, and represents a significant step up for the series. It's built around a completely new 20.3MP APS-C CMOS sensor and wrapped in the series' first all-metal body. The result is a handsome camera of similar size to Sony's NEX models but one that takes a rather different approach. September 1, 2011
Samsung SH100 14Mp Wi-Fi compact camera The ST1000 was Samsung's first Wi-Fi enabled camera that not only allowed users to e-mail pics from a hotspot, but had GPS thrown in just to prove you were really there. With the SH100 wireless compact, the company goes beyond snap and share by offering tight integration with its top tier Android products enabling tethering with a compatible handset or tablet, so that it becomes the SH100 viewfinder for remote capture. August 26, 2011
Samsung ST80 If you really need to e-mail or upload photos to Facebook right from your camera, the compact Samsung ST80 might be a good fit for you. But at $250, and despite sharp images, the lack of image stabilization is a big negative. April 1, 2011
Samsung TL500 For a first entry into enthusiast compact territory, Samsung puts in a credible showing with its TL500, an attractive camera with a thoughtful design, fast f1.8 lens, and flip-and-twist AMOLED display. But it faces some steep competition and ultimately can't keep up with the crowd. April 1, 2011
Sony Alpha A77 camera looks like a DSLR Its size, $2000 kit price, and weather-sealed magnesium alloy body are all well in line with what you'd expect from a high-end consumer DSLR. Its 24.3-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, A-mount for interchangeable DSLR lenses, and manual control scheme are usually found only on DSLRs. And perhaps most important, it just looks like a DSLR. August 25, 2011
Sony Alpha SLT-A35 The 16 megapixel Sony Alpha SLT-a35 is part of Sony's second-generation SLT (single lens translucent) DSLR line, using the company's unique Translucent Mirror Technology. There are a few differences between the new model and its predecessor, the a33, with most changes happening under the hood. December 20, 2011
Sony Alpha SLT-A35 (With 18-55mm lens) A solid camera for point-and-shoot upgraders who want to be able to shoot action and video, the Sonly Alpha SLT-A35's bulk may still be a turn-off for some. July 15, 2011
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V point-and-shoot You'd be hard-pressed to find a camera that offers more features than the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V ($350). Two years ago, its 16X-optical-zoom lens would have been enough to turn heads. In today's world of ever-shrinking cameras with ever-expanding zoom ranges, that zoom lens is simply one of this camera's many distinguishing factors. July 13, 2011
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V: Feature-filled megazoom camera excels at video A couple of trends are evident in the category of long-zoom cameras. First, companies are outfitting impossibly small cameras--pocket megazooms--with lenses that provide optical zoom ranges of 10X and up. Second, companies are going even bigger with larger-sized fixed-lens cameras, equipping them with optical-zoom lenses that approach 40X. September 21, 2011
Sony Handycam HDR-CX360V Sony's Handycam HDR-CX360V should be the company's $599 camcorder offering, but I suspect is priced about $200 higher in order to rationalize the too-crowded product line. The good news is that if you work a little, you can find it for under $600, at which price it's a pretty good deal. Because for $800, it delivers solid, but not great, video quality, and an interesting but incomplete feature set. August 22, 2011
Sony's A77 Is The New King of APS-C DSLRs When we named Sony's Alpha 55 Camera of the Year last year, we didn't expect that the company would come along with a model like the new Alpha 77. In addition to the benefits we loved in the A55, such as full-time phase-detection autofocus even when recording video, Sony has added a slew of features for this flagship fixed-mirror DSLR. With all of this new technology, we were eager to get it into the Popular Photography Test Lab. Now that we have, we can tell you that the results should make Canon and Nikon worry.
